3 suspects found in BSU shooting

Police say victim offered rides to accused murderers

MUNCIE -- Police Tuesday identified a third man wanted in connection with the shooting death of a Ball State University student.\nPolice are looking for Damien B. Sanders, 21, of Muncie. They said he was the third person who accepted a ride from Karl Harford, 20, of Carmel, whose body was found in his own car Sunday morning.\nSanders has not been charged in Harford's death, said Chief Joe Winkle of the Muncie Police Department. He has two outstanding warrants for failure to appear and has seven previous arrests as an adult, mostly for robbery, police said at a news conference about the Harford case.\nMonday, police arrested Brandon L. Patterson, 18, charged with murder and armed robbery, and a 14-year-old male accomplice, charged with assisting a criminal and sent to Muncie's juvenile detention center.\nNone of the suspects attends Ball State, police said.\nPolice said Harford had given the three suspects a ride home from an off-campus party Saturday night.\nDuring the ride, the three forced Harford to drive to an abandoned building where they stole his wallet, shot him, then put his body in the back seat of the car, police said. The men got away with $2, police said.\nThe car with his body was found in an alley on the city's east side about two miles from campus, police said.\nAn autopsy determined he died of a single bullet wound to the head fired by another person, Delaware County Coroner James Clevenger said.\nToxicology tests were pending, but there was no indication drugs or alcohol played a role in the death, Clevenger said.\nHarford, who planned to major in accounting, resided off-campus, university spokeswoman Heather Shupp said. Harford graduated from Carmel High School in 2002, school officials said.
