Haiti's fight for democracy

When we hear talk about democracy in Haiti, we often hear Jean-Bertrand Aristide won "flawed" elections in 2000. How exactly were these elections flawed? Aristide won by a landslide (92 percent of the vote) in which voter turnout at 65 percent of the population was greater than it was in the United States' 2000 presidential elections.

Chomping at the bit

According to a recent survey by the Center for Disease Control, 36 percent of Hoosiers over the age of 65 have lost all of their original teeth. This is 150 percent more than the national average, yet IU refuses to provide its graduate employees with a dental plan.

IU loses to Illinois, will not make NCAA or NIT

The Hoosiers (14-15) dropped their ninth game in the past 12 Friday in a loss to Illinois 71-59 and posted their first losing season since 1969-70, when they went 7-17. They will not make a postseason tournament for the first time since the 1976-77 season. Mark Johnson led Indiana with 16 points --his second straight career high. A.J. Moye added 13 points and nine rebounds in his final college game, and the Hoosiers shot just 34.5 percent from the field.

Hoosiers stay alive

INDIANAPOLIS --With 8:15 to go in the second half and IU and Ohio State tied at 58, the Hoosiers took the lead with the unlikeliest of candidates. Junior Mark Johnson, a former walk-on, hit a three-pointer and helped lead the Hoosiers (14-14) to an 83-69 win over Ohio State (14-16) in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. "I'm just playing within the offense and seeing what happens," Johnson said. "I didn't realize what the score was. I got the pass. I was open, and I stroked it. It took a lot of pressure off of me and made me feel more comfortable out there."

No Sweat! calls to 'open the books'

Kernan asks for tuition limits

Gov. Joe Kernan urged Indiana public colleges and universities to cap tuition increases at no more than 4 percent for the 2004-2005 school year in a letter to the Indiana public college presidents and board of trustees members.

Haiti service trip cancelled

There are a lot of reasons for students to cancel their spring break plans -- but usually a military coup d'etat isn't one of them. The IU Timmy Foundation, a local chapter of the Indianapolis based organization that works to better the lives of children around the world, had planned a medical mission trip to Haiti to take place over spring break, but violent demonstration canceled their trip.

Court denies Big Red, hands win to Crimson

Although there were a few detours along the way, Crimson finally has what it campaigned for -- the official title of IU Student Association election winners. "It's been a long run, but I think it's really most important that the rules were upheld," said Scott Norman, Crimson congressional secretary. "Obviously we were hoping to go about winning in another way, but we did the best job winning the election that we could, and I am confident we are going to do a good job."

Sophomore Christen Babcock first became familiar with Harry Potter three years ago when the juvenile wizard hit the silver screen. Since then, Babcock has grown into a huge Harry Potter fan, even naming her houseplant "Dobby," after a character from the series. "I'm 19 years old, and I'm obsessed with Harry Potter," Babcock said. Babcock isn't alone when it comes to odd obsessions. As embarrassing, time-consuming and expensive as they may be, obsessions plague people everywhere, and students at IU are no exception.

Spring breakers targeted

After of week of freedom from academia, many IU students will return from spring break with sunburns, suntans or at least a few good stories to tell. Unfortunately for some, these stories might include probation, the "drunk tank" and an all-expenses-not-paid return trip for a court date. Criminal Defense Attorney and IU alumnus Michael Grabner said a criminal record is not an uncommon souvenir for spring breakers leaving his native Panama City Beach, Fla.

Justices unanimous in election decision

In a unanimous decision, the Student Body Supreme Court has upheld the IU Student Association Elections Commission's ruling to disqualify the Big Red ticket executives from this year's election. As a result, the decision names the Crimson executives the official winners of the election.

Madrid train blasts kill 192

MADRID, Spain -- Ten terrorist bombs tore through trains and stations along a commuter line at the height of Madrid's morning rush hour Thursday, killing 192 people and wounding more than 1,400 others before this weekend's general elections. Officials blamed Basque separatists for the worst terrorist attack in Spanish history.

Journalism Dean inducted into Hall

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Trevor Brown, dean of IU's School of Journalism, and George P. Stewart, founder of the Indianapolis Recorder, are among five people to be inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame next month. The others selected were Steve Bell, a telecommunications professor at Ball State University and a former ABC News reporter and anchor; Henry Gill, a photographer who grew up in Washington, Ind., and covered events around the world; and Edward Spray, the president of Scripps Networks.

South Korean president impeached after protests outside parliament

SEOUL, South Korea - Parliament voted to impeach President Roh Moo-hyun on illegal electioneering and incompetence charges Friday following hours of scuffles and dramatic protests. Roh's presidential powers will be suspended while the matter is referred to the Constitutional Court for final approval to unseat the leader. The court has 180 days to rule.

Obese? Oh, please!

I like sports that aren't really sports. Right off the bat, this gets a little tricky. What is a sport? The dictionary says a sport is a "physical activity governed by a set of rules." Thanks to that hopelessly nebulous definition, driving my car around town is a sport. So is making Hollandaise sauce.
