Some 'Dates' are better than others

Same Sandler, different movie

The duo from "The Wedding Singer" are at it again, with a similar story and the same results. \nSandler plays Dr. Henry Roth, a veterinarian who works at an aquarium in Hawaii. The movie introduces Roth with a montage of several women he has been involved with for no longer than a week discussing him. So basically, we are to assume that Sandler's character is a womanizer who is afraid of commitment. But seriously, how can Sandler be a believable womanizer when he's the same guy who played Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore? \n Enter Lucy (Barrymore), a pretty young woman who lost her short-term memory after a car accident. While "Memento" was able to pull off the amnesia angle flawlessly, this film has its holes. For instance, Lucy can remember events that have happened on a particular day, but the next day her memory resets and she forgets everything. So, Lucy's father (Blake Clark) and lisping, steroidal brother (Sean Astin) play along and set things up so Lucy believes she is always living in the day of her accident, which is reminiscent of "Groundhog Day." Even the townspeople play along. \n Henry is able to win her over, but when he goes to meet her for breakfast the next day she has forgotten him and thinks he is some pervert. Thus, the plot is set in motion: Henry must come up with a new way to win Lucy's heart every day. While some situations are funnier than others, couldn't Henry just use the same tactic over and over each day? It's not like she would remember. \n The film has its comical moments and includes some of Sandler's trademark poop and fart jokes, but it is certainly not one of his best. The characters are nothing new, the plot is too forced and the ending is sentimentally typical. Few people go to a Sandler flick for its wit and romance, they go for the fart jokes and that's exactly what they'll get.\n "50 First Dates" is essentially Sandler being Sandler. There are some clever references to some of his past films, and if you like the idea of a walrus puking on a manly-looking German woman, it's good for a few laughs.
