Thousands fill theaters for 'Passion' opening

·

PLANO, Texas -- Even before sunrise, believers and nonbelievers alike poured into movie theaters around the nation on Ash Wednesday for the opening of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." An estimated 6,000 people filled all 20 auditoriums at a Cinemark theater in this Dallas suburb to watch the film. All the tickets had been bought and donated by a local churchgoer. "I hope everybody sees it with an open mind," said Rick Pierce, 53, a Baptist who sipped coffee and chewed on a breakfast burrito at the theater before the first showing.

The colors of spring break

·

As spring break gets closer, I wonder what I will wear. I have a few engagements planned, but none that excite me enough to spend money. Though I won't go shopping before spring break, I am happy I finally have a style reference for shopping during spring break. This season, some intersting new fashion trends have developed. Some of these are repeats of old trends with a bright twist. Others are continuations of the most fashionable winter looks. Over the course of winter, there has been a battle over the color and style for the spring wardrobe. You could see it being played out in magazines such as Elle, Marie Claire, In Style and Vogue. The ads in the magazines were suggesting something totally different than the style advice.

Talents shine through poetry, music

·

Established and aspiring poets will take the stage to express their feelings through their works at Union Board's Poetry Slam from 9 to 11 p.m. tonight. "Poetry Slam gives students the time to read their thoughts through words and music that they might not get the chance to do," said Mary Hansell, co-director of Celebrate the Arts, a Union Board committee in charge of the event. "It is a time for them to share their work and others to enjoy it." The Poetry Slam will take place in the IMUG Cafe, which is in the south lounge of the Indiana Memorial Union. The event is free and coffee and cookies will be served for all to enjoy while waiting to perform or just relaxing and listening to the works of others. The golden age of Hollywood

·

The movie begins. A monotone, cheesy theme with too many violins and not enough tempo plays, while an archaic cursive title fades onto the screen. The movie is called something like "In a Lonely Place" or "Strangers on a Train." Because the credits are at the beginning of the movie, it takes too long for the action to start. And when it does, the characters talk unnaturally and nasally -- primitive recording equipment and years of deterioration and copying take their toll. Plus, there is no color!

Teen queen not a scream

·

Even a healthy dose of vintage-infused Prada can't save Sara Sugarman's latest offering -- in fact, hip fashion sense is about the only thing "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" has going for it. The basic plot is familiar enough

Another risqué teen sex comedy

·

Raunchy teen sex romps are nothing new. Over the past five years or so, Hollywood has produced countless movies involving horny high school and college-aged kids trying to get laid. "Eurotrip" is definitely not anything new in that department.

Glass' story far from 'Shattered'

·

A whiny, insecure, placating overachiever -- that's how Hayden Christensen portrays journalism's posterboy for bad behavior, Stephen Glass. "Shattered Glass" recreates the real-life events leading up to the downfall of the seemingly brilliant career of The New Republic's youngest reporter.

'Jury' gives no reason to 'Runaway'

·

For those who love a good legal drama with a surprise twist ending, "Runaway Jury" is the movie to see. Based on the John Grisham novel, "Runaway Jury" gives an inside look at jury selection and how legal councils determine who will serve on their jury.

When it comes to comedy in Bloomington, quality is more important than quantity as there are only a few places to go to get your weekly fill of laughter.

HIGHTLIGHTING HIP-HOP

·

In a recent night at Teter Quad, rhythmic beats unconsciously slipped into the steps of students walking through the halls. With the grooving noise building and the lyrics growing bolder, students discovered themselves immersed in a strange world at battle with very uncommon weapons directing the flow of punishment -- two turntables and a microphone. These are the weapons of choice used in the underground art of MC battling, where the victor is he who has better mastery of the spoken word.
