Incumbent keeps seat in trustee election

IU board of trustees incumbent Sue Talbot will get another three years to make her mark as an IU trustee. Talbot won the annual election for the open trustee seat Wednesday, defeating the nearest candidate by more than 3,500 votes in a race that brought in nearly 29,500 ballots.

IU reacts to Iraq handover

The U.S.-led coalition handed over power Monday in Iraq to an interim Iraqi government two days ahead of the scheduled June 30 deadline in a move that caught many off guard. In a stealthy ceremony within the heavily fortified green zone in central Baghdad, the former Coalition Provisional Administration administer of Iraq, Paul Bremer, formally handed over responsibility of governing Iraq to Iraq's Prime Minister Iyad Allawi and his interim administration.

Bloomington to sparkle on the Fourth

Whether you like parades, barbecues with friends, or simply gazing at the firework displays, Bloomington has many events and festivals this year for celebrating the Fourth of July. "This is the nation's birthday," said Dave Cobb, who is the 2004 Bloomington fireworks chairman. "We can't wait for it to happen again. It's just so much fun." The fireworks display on campus is a tradition dating back 55 years ago. The event will be held Sunday at dusk at the IU Memorial Stadium, with an expected attendance of 50,000 people, Cobb said.

The Fourth of July has remained a cause for celebration since the day the Declaration of Independence was signed and continues to inspire even the least patriotic among us to show appreciation for our country. Unfortunately for some, the holiday has become an entirely different day of remembrance.

Triennial harp competition returns to Auer Hall

Since winning the gold medal at the 2001 USA International Harp Competition in Bloomington, IU alumna Dan Yu has achieved tremendous success and notoriety with a recording contract and recitals around the world. Her prizes included a $55,000 golden harp, a recording contract and debut recitals in New York, London, Paris and Tokyo. In 2002, Egan Records released her debut CD "The Nightingale."
