No NCAA berth for IU

The Hoosiers will have to put away their dancing shoes for another year. The IU men's basketball team failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row Sunday as its name wasn't called by the NCAA's Selection Committee. Instead, the Hoosiers are relegated to playing Vanderbilt Wednesday in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. at Assembly Hall and will be aired on ESPN2.

Iowa's selection raises questions

Selection Sunday came and went, and the IU basketball squad was among the teams waiting, watching and praying its name would be revealed as a NCAA Tournament team. However, with a 15-13 record, the Hoosiers' hopes for an at- large bid went by the wayside with Friday's embarrassing display against Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament.

Biocomplexity Institute furthers life science research

Professor James Glazier is a physicist who stumbled into biology. "In ninth-grade biology, I didn't want to cut up a frog so they sent me to 11th-grade physics," he said. But Glazier was reintroduced to biology when he studied soap bubbles and determined that their interactions were similar to those of cell interactions.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan called Thursday for a world treaty on terrorism that would outlaw attacks targeting civilians and establish a framework for a collective response to the global threat. Although the United Nations and its agencies already have 12 treaties covering terrorism, a universal definition has been elusive.

Verizon donates to Middle Way

Bloomington's Middle Way House has $2,500 more to support youth programs thanks to the mobile phone giant Verizon Wireless. Verizon pledged the money to the Bloomington organization formed more than 30 years ago to combat domestic violence and protect women and children who are its victims. The donation marks the 10-year anniversary of Verizon's HopeLine program.

Student charged for false reporting

A 19-year-old IU student will face false reporting charges after she admitted to fabricating a story she told police about being drugged and raped in an Assembly Hall restroom during the IU-Purdue basketball game.

Racial tensions explored

"Is Black History Month Racist?" That was the big question Thursday, as several IU students waited silently for the start of a forum put on by IU's Community Educator Program to begin. A panel discussion, occasioned by Indiana Daily Student Opinion Columnist Warren Chris Freiberg's column, bearing a headline labeling Black History Month as racist, was led by several IU students of opposing viewpoints.

Universities around the country tussle with military recruiters

The United States has always heavily depended upon the participation and willingness of the nation's youth to join the military. But lately recruiters have received harsh reviews from universities that do not agree with their recruiting procedures. In February the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia said that specific law schools had the First Amendment right to prohibit military recruiters whose policies discriminated against homosexuals.

Squad to beat the heat in the pool

'Small but mighty' squad travels to Purdue's pool for NCAA Championships

Of the 22 women on the roster, five swimmers and four divers will carry this year's team motto of "small but mighty" to the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette. Wilson leads fleet of 5 Hoosiers to NCAAs

Typically, an NCAA title is won by a team with a large number of athletes entered in various events, including relays. Every once in awhile, a team comes along with the potential to win on the strength of just a few athletes. This year, the Hoosiers are that team. With just five athletes entered, IU is one of four teams with a chance to take this year's team title.
