Returning home to Haiti

Nick Andre knew he needed to stay in Haiti. His wife and five children were there. And even though he had a job teaching Haitian Creole at IU and was pursuing a master’s degree in French Linguistics, something told him he needed to be home.

McMurray wins 2010 Brickyard 400

With McMurray, who races for Chip Ganassi Racing, taking the checkered flag today, Chip Ganassi has become the first owner to win the Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500, and the Brickyard 400 in the same year. McMurray also won the Daytona 500, and Dario Franchitti brought Ganassi the other Indianapolis win.

FIRE grants IU speech policies ‘yellow light’

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, an organization that aims to defend students’ rights on college campuses, has identified IU-Bloomington as a “yellow light” university, meaning FIRE has found several policies to be too vague and allow for too much discretion on the part of university administrators.

Festival celebrates Eurasian culture, music

The 18th-annual Silk Road Bayram in the Willkie Auditorium celebrated the different countries along the ancient trade route, which wound its way from China to modern-day Italy. The event featured both a cultural gallery and musical performances from those familiar with the region.

Collisions on Lake Monroe not rare

Lake Monroe is not safe from watercraft accidents. On June 28, 51-year-old Susan Collier and her grandson, 8-year-old Gage Pruett, died following a boat collision. These were just two of the three fatalities that have taken place on the lake in 2010.

Four-legged best friends found at Adopt-a-Thon

The Bloomington Animal Care and Shelter hosted an Adopt-a-Thon on Saturday in an effort to reduce the near-capacity numbers they are experiencing this summer. The event ran from noon to midnight with hopes of facilitating 50 adoptions in one day.

Teen violin virtuoso wins international competition

Brian Allen, a member of the Violin Virtuosi, recently won the Lions Clubs International Global Youth Music Competition. He was awarded a monetary prize of $10,000 and also traveled to Sydney for a week and a half to perform in the 2010 music competition.
