Spielberg's 'A.I' vision a long way off

·

The IDS has long been dedicated to bringing its readership tough-as-nails, hard-hitting arts and culture coverage. It was in that noble spirit -- certainly not the spirit of idle Internet-surfing spurred on by boredom -- that I visited the promotional Web site of "A.I." "A.I.," a widely lauded futuristic rumination on what it means to be human, rose to the top of the box office in its opening weekend and has since sank like a stone. It is thus, officially, the first Steven Spielberg picture loved by the critics and loathed by moviegoers.

Students have right to smoke

Smoking is no longer allowed at Valparaiso University residence halls. At the beginning of the fall semester, smoking is no longer allowed in the three dormitories which previously allowed students to puff on a square. There are obviously mixed emotions among the 3,600 students. About 1,026 students voted in the March 2000 referendum to ban smoking in the residence halls. The referendum took place this fall after it was passed through VU's President Alan Harre's office.

Senior guard takes charge in historic night

·

Senior point guard Heather Cassady peered over her shoulder at her teammates during a timeout in Saturday's game. She shook her hands and shouted to the Hoosiers, "Settle down, white." Northern Arizona had chopped IU's lead to 28-23, and Cassady didn't want to see her team's morale drop. Her teammates weren't hitting their shots, so the senior captain took matters into her own hands.

Powell: Iraq needs 'regime change'

·

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin Powell told members of Congress Wednesday that there must be a "regime change" in Iraq and he suggested that the United States "might have to do it alone." At a House hearing, Powell said President Bush was considering "the most serious set of options one might imagine" for dealing with President Saddam Hussein and his defiance of U.N. international weapons inspections.

Hype kills Spielberg's sci-fi 'Report'

·

Many critics have hailed Steven Spielberg's latest opus, "Minority Report" as his finest piece of action celluloid since "Raiders of the Lost Ark." First off, the flick isn't action oriented -- it's much more like a sci-fi tinged film noir. Secondly, "the Beard" has churned out better works in wake of his 1981 juggernaut -- both "Indiana Jones" sequels, "Jurassic Park" and "Saving Private Ryan" are all far superior to this "Report."

Iranian president blasts Bush

·

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's pro-reform president, responding to President Bush's comments in support of the reform movement here, denounced the American leader on Sunday as a "warmonger" with a false view of events in this country. The sharp comments by President Mohammad Khatami came as another top reformist told Bush to stay out of the movement's struggle with hard-liner clerics, who have tried to prevent change in Iran's Islamic government.

Indiana plan designed to block international students dies in committee

·

INDIANAPOLIS - International student recruitment at Indianapolis University-Purdue University at Indianapois could have suffered a setback this year. But a measure that would limit the enrollment of non-citizens at state universities died in committee after a critical deadline passed last week. The author of House Bill 1286, Rep. Dennis K. Kruse, sought to keep higher education institutions from enrolling students from countries the U.S. Secretary of State has designated as sponsors of international terrorism.

'Ocean's' worth taking a gamble on

·

A remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film starring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, "Ocean's Eleven" tantalizes the eyes with gorgeous, high-dollar movie stars carrying out a nearly impossible casino heist that boggles the mind. But while both eyes and brain are pleasured, this pretty movie by Steven Soderbergh ("Erin Brockovich," "Traffic") falls flat in true star power.

Israeli campaign halted

·

JENIN, West Bank -- With Israeli forces gone from most Palestinian cities in the West Bank, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared Sunday that Israel has completed the latest stage of its "war on terrorism" and will turn to new tactics as it presses the campaign. Israel withdrew troops from Nablus, the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, and most of Ramallah, the Palestinian headquarters in the territory. But soldiers remained at two sensitive and volatile sites -- Yasser Arafat's compound in Ramallah and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where armed Palestinians are holed up inside. The Israeli army also said its forces remain in several villages near Jenin, though Israeli forces Friday left Jenin city and the neighboring refugee camp, the scene of the heaviest fighting in three weeks of Israeli incursions aimed in the West Bank.

Summer heat, prices could increase local fuel and flee thefts

·

Escalating prices at the pump seem to be the motive for the increasing amount of fuel and flee thefts at local gas stations. The increase in gas prices during the last few years results from a continuing energy crisis where the consumer demand for gasoline is surpassing the available resources of fuel.
