The power of music

·

A dark-haired man in a worn-in Grateful Dead T-shirt sits on a blanket, bobbing his dreadlocked head up and down to the beat provided by Blue Moon Revue. To his right, an older, slightly balding man stands, gently tapping his foot to the music. To his left, two golden retrievers chase each other around in circles, eventually running after a young barefoot girl, her long brown hair windblown over her smiling face. Below her, the green grass blew in the wind while the blue but cloudy sky illuminates all of Dunn Meadow Saturday for this year's Calmfest.

'Planet of the Apes' a lot of monkey business

·

Tim Burton's dark remake of "Planet of the Apes" has a considerable amount of potential. But predictably enough, it fails to deliver. Burton's conceit is that this surefire blockbuster is a "reimagining" of the 1968 sci-fi classic starring a curmudgeonly Charlton Heston as an ill-fated astronaut. Burton even goes so far as to credit the inspiration to Pierre Boulle's novel in the opening credits.

New program helps teachers

·

A group of approximately 30 educators met twice this month to learn how to review prospective teachers' portfolios. The pilot program at the IU School of Education was one of IU's reactions to changes in Indiana standards to require classroom teachers to be involved in the evaluation process of licensing new educators.

Do the seats proud

·

Ever wonder what the 20,000 seats in Memorial Stadium that aren't filled do on Saturdays? The players know how bad it sucks to have a crowd that could be out-numbered by a state-wide meeting of the Athletes Foot Association. But what about those poor seats? It's the same seats week after week that aren't used -- you know, those seats in all four corners of Memorial Stadium. They're there to be sat on, sometimes stood on and occasionally slept on, no doubt in another IU defeat. Instead, they're usually limited to shining in the sun or collecting raindrops and empty cups. Poor, lonely seats.

Fox House to close

·

Joseph Ramos lived in the Fox House for about six months last year. He described the building as "a gift from God." "It was a beautiful place," he said. "It was a good idea, but it was like a zoo." A recovery residence for people living with HIV and AIDS, the Fox House will be shut down by the Center of Behavioral Health, its property manager, when its five-year lease ends in December. The house is widely known to have suffered from financial and management woes since opening in 1996.

West definitely best in NBA

·

They might as well call the Eastern Conference the minor league of the NBA. The far superior records in the Western Conference are proof that the West is not only better than the East, it is worlds apart.

Brit-style pop has compelling introspective side

·

If you don't listen closely, you might think the first track of David Mead's Mine and Yours is a Radiohead album in disguise, with undertones of Britain's pop artist Jason Falkner. But if you listen more carefully, Mead's sweet, high-pitched voice is laced with insight and optimism, proving he is his own musician.

Keep drug out of public's hands

·

Good news for couch potatoes and everyone else who hates to workout but wishes he could magically have a nicely defined body. It may be too good to be true, but now with just the swallow of a pill you can have ripped and defined muscles. Sounds like a cheesy infomercial, right?

Hoosiers stay hot in Big Ten, take 3 of 4 from Iowa

·

The IU men's baseball team earned a tie for the first place position in the Big Ten after taking three of four games from Iowa this weekend at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers had a chance for a sweep yesterday but lost in a slugfest, 17-13.

Laser-tag

·

I slid to my right and strained to hear my opponents over the techno music that boomed through the game field. I stepped from behind my barrier at a glimpse of the blue team's blinking chest plate against the black lights, determined to make the first tag.

Welcome to the real world

·

Gosh, it's a beautiful day. Another year has come and gone and here I am smack-dab in the middle of my wonderful college career. While I'm repeating "o, as, a, amos, an" over and over in my head, thousands of students are preparing to be acknowledged on Saturday and enter the glorious world of IU Alumni license plates (or skipping the graduation part and having their diplomas snail-mailed).

Council votes to remedy west side traffic woes

·

Residents fed up with congested traffic on the west side of town might finally see some relief in the near future. The Bloomington City Council unanimously approved a preliminary resolution that would transfer $120,000 out of Westside Industries Fund to Monroe County to connect Profile Parkway with Wayne's Lane. Wayne's Lane is also expected to receive improvements, which officials hope will lower congestion near Curry Pike.
