IUPD busts AEPi party

An IU Police Department stop of two underage students at the corner of 17th and Grant streets began a chain of events that could lead to disciplinary action against Alpha Epsilon Pi. The routine stop early Friday morning also led to an illegal possession and consumption charge against the fraternity's president, junior Nathan Schiller.

Three for the price of fun

The type of opera most people are familiar with is grand, dramatic and seen at a place like the MAC. It utilizes a full orchestra, a large cast and three or four long acts. But opera is a broad genre and there are smaller, lighter works which do not draw the same amount of attention when performed because they lack the monumental stature of Wagner and Verdi.

In its first home game of a two-game weekend between Ball State and Southwest Missouri State, the IU field hockey team dominated the Cardinals 3-0. All three IU goals were scored in the second half, one each by junior Nikki Orciuch, sophomore Lydia Schrott, and freshman Frederique Meeuwen respectively.

Russian school standoff ends in tragedy

BESLAN, Russia -- Wails of mourning echoed through the streets of this southern Russian town Sunday, and the region's top police officer offered his resignation in the wake of the school hostage-taking that left at least 350 people dead.

Couch, Gildon, Levens among NFL players released

Tim Couch's stay in Green Bay was short and unproductive. The top overall draft choice in the 1999 draft by Cleveland, Couch was released by the Browns in June. He joined the Packers and was projected as Brett Favre's backup. But the quarterback never progressed, and the Packers cut him Sunday as teams got down to the 53-man roster limit for the regular season.

IU makes solid season debut against Texas

The IU men's cross country team opened its season with a relaxed 5,000-meter race against Texas on a muggy Friday evening at the IU varsity cross country course. The two teams spent the race in a tight pack, with 14 runners finishing within three seconds of each other. The meet was unscored to allow unattached runners to compete.

Ball State knocks off IU for 1st loss

Two undefeated teams took Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium Sunday, but only one left that way. In their first ever meeting, the Ball State Cardinals moved to 4-0 when they beat IU 1-0 in the women's soccer team's home opener.

Team uses meet to gain experience

The IU women's cross country team kicked off its season with the Indiana Open Friday night. The home meet was not scored and the only women runners present for the meet were the Hoosiers. Still, the lack of competition gave the Hoosiers a good chance to gain experience. Redshirt sophomore Jessica Gall, who sat out last season due to a quadricep injury, was the first woman to cross the finish line.

Hamilton moves into No. 2 job after Sauter released INDIANAPOLIS -- Joe Hamilton's legs are healthy and apparently so is his right arm. After missing two NFL seasons because of a knee injury, Hamilton is returning to the NFL as Peyton Manning's top backup.

IU takes second in weekend tourney to St. Louis

Coming off Wednesday's win against IU-Purdue University Indianapolis and with history on its side, the IU women's volleyball team went into this weekend's IU Credit Union Invitational with high hopes. The Hoosiers had won the past three Invitationals, going a perfect 9-0 in the four years the team has hosted the tournament.

What's the funny walk for?

Please excuse any member of the IU football team if he appears to be walking a little funny. Coming off a 41-10 shellacking over Central Michigan, the Hoosiers may be a little bruised, but none was really injured. So if you see any of the Hoosiers walking weirdly, rest assured, they are alright.

Classic composers

The Hoosiers picked up right where they left off this weekend by capturing two victories in dramatic fashion while getting new coach Mike Freitag off to a perfect start at the reigns of the defending champions. On Friday, IU received quite a scare from Boston University, who put themselves ahead 2-1 with two quick goals at the start of the second half.

Freshman begins career with success

Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter couldn't have written a better opening chapter to his career as a Hoosier. Most of IU's true freshmen didn't even see the playing field Saturday, but Porter lit it up.

Army chaplain bridges war, civilian life

EDINBURGH, Ind. -- Lt. Col. Jim Cotter has never been in a combat zone, but he knows war is serious business. He sees the evidence in the eyes of the wounded in their hospital beds, in the face of a soldier whose 3-year-old son doesn't recognize her after her time in Afghanistan. It's painfully clear in the words of a soldier who is asked if he saw anyone die in Iraq and replies, "Yeah, my marriage."

Hoosier basks in spotlight of RNC

Local playwright's work opens at Rose Firebay Theater

Local playwright Thomas Kristopher originally wrote his two one-act plays for a competition connected with the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival. In addition to winning the competition's $1000 cash prize and having his work performed in New Orleans next spring, Kristopher recently was able to have his play performed in Bloomington. Kristopher's plays, "Loose Hog in the House of God" and "On How to Accommodate Marlo's Frying Pan," opened this past weekend at the John Waldron Arts Center.

Bush's best idea (maybe)

I am entranced by President Bush's "ownership society" notion. The phrase, spoken by the president only once during his Thursday night acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in New York, is part of a larger centrist, moderate theme the president has proposed to create a more fluid economy and a more productive worker that is empowered, not hindered, by the government which protects, not ignores, their needs.

Fight the war, conserve energy

I was watching MTV2 a few weeks ago and was struck by the hypocrisy I witnessed on "Music With a Message." After a weak and up-beat critical video about the war in Iraq came another video by a pathetic rap-rock band called Chronic Future. Before the video, the band explained why America should not be overseas fighting for oil. It's members were careful to point out their support of our troops, but are "against the policy that puts them over there."

Shut up about the Gaza strip

When it comes to reporting about Israel and Palestine there is no way you can find an objective story. Look at what seems to be a benign story about elections in Palestine.

Housing left to chance

When freshman Bailey Foster went to her freshman orientation, she was hoping to meet some people so she would already have a group of friends when she came back to school in August. But Foster did better than that - she met her roommate, Elizabeth Emerson. "We just started talking and we got along really well," Foster said. When she applied for housing, Foster, like many freshmen, had decided to leave her roommate to chance and go "potluck," letting the University pick her roommate for her.
