The cross and the crossword

Six Across. Three-letter word. Begins with "G." A person whose sexual orientation is to persons of the same sex. Six Down. Three-letter word. Begins with "G." The principal object of faith and worship in Christian religion. Gay and God: two little words, two big concepts. In a crossword puzzle, these terms are able to bond harmoniously, sharing the same beginning letter "G." However, in this ever-expanding crossword puzzle called life, these words tend to cause conflict whenever they cross paths.

Daylight-saving worth changing

Daylight-saving time is not some random system implemented by most states to confuse Indiana. Mitch Daniels is, in fact, on the right track by attempting to lead Indiana out of the "dark ages." Even if one ignores the fact that the time difference creates a disconnect between Indiana and various other states within our time zone, in terms of commerce and casual communication, there are legitimate health benefits associated with daylight-saving.

A thin line: do not cross

Students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are in an uproar over a comic strip printed in their student newspaper. The Daily Illini recently published a comic involving a student who wants to tell a "Jew joke" but decides against it because he doesn't want "Isaiah down at the bank to beat me with his nose." The comic and its creator, Matt Vroom, immediately drew negative attention from both Jewish groups and students. Vroom's comic strips have been known to poke fun at stereotypes, but this time he went too far.

European spacecraft enters lunar orbit

BERLIN -- A small spacecraft has made it into lunar orbit, signaling Europe's first successful mission to the moon and paving the way for the craft to be used to study the lunar surface, a European Space Agency spokesman said Tuesday.

Saddam diverted oil for food money to suicide bomber families

NEW YORK -- Saddam Hussein diverted money from the U.N. oil-for-food program to pay millions of dollars to families of Palestinian suicide bombers who carried out attacks on Israel, say congressional investigators who uncovered evidence of the money trail.

Scoreboard Stoops ticks me off

Something happened this weekend that made me so mad that I was yelling at the TV more than I usually do. I had to take a second dose of my medication and wash it down with a six-pack just to get calm again. It's something that really bothers me, and I think I have to address it. Veteran defenders expected to lead team

Despite a 2-1 loss in the Big Ten tournament last week, heads remained high after the announcement the IU men's soccer team would be seeded No. 2 in the NCAA tournament. Much of the reason for enthusiasm among the Hoosiers was the knowledge that their tournament fate lies in the hands of five men who have been there before -- the defense.

Professor studies political promises

Recent studies conducted by IU students have uncovered a disparity between the number of campaign promises made by politicians and the number kept. V450: Promises and Performance in U.S. Congress is Professor Evan Ringquist's School of Public and Environmental Affairs gem. Students researching the performance of politicians from 1992 to 2002 found that, on average, just more than three-fifths of all promises made on campaign trails are kept by their makers.

Driver could face 10 to 20 years

Police arrested the driver who caused a fatal car crash Nov. 9 upon his release from Bloomington Hospital Tuesday. Bryan M. Gooldy, 45, the driver of the car that killed IU alumna Katharine B. Comiskey, will make an appearance in Monroe County Court at 2:30 p.m. today, said Bloomington Police Department Cpt. Joe Qualters in a press release.

'Man of La Mancha' produced, performed solely by students

Reigning champs set sights

The uncertain future of where the NCAA men's soccer tournament selection committee would place the IU men's soccer team in the tournament was on the minds of the team members as they gathered to watch ESPNEWS' broadcast of the selection show Monday at The City Grille. The defending NCAA national champions made an early exit from the Big Ten tournament last Friday as Michigan State defeated the Hoosiers 2-1.

Hearting Huckabees: Sudan native uses experience in role

Ger Duany was first surrounded by the drama of a civil war-torn country and then fate led him to the drama of the American silver screen. Duany is originally from Sudan, but considers Bloomington home. He came to the United States as a refugee when he was only 16. Not only was he a real refugee, but he plays one in the new movie "I (Heart) Huckabees."

Out in the Cold

The holidays are approaching and the weather keeps getting colder. In and around Monroe County an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people are without a place to call home. Alumnus Rod Paige leaves post in Bush administration

IU alumnus Rod Paige resigned his post as Secretary of Education Monday. In his resignation letter to the president, Paige said he would vacate his position at the end of President George W. Bush's first term unless a successor is not named.
