'Pinafore' offers humor

When one thinks of the great operatic traditions of the world, England usually doesn't come to mind as much as Italy, Germany and France. When IU shows operas, they usually are from those countries, and if the performance is in English, it is usually a translation from Italian, German or French (and sometimes Russian). Such is not the case with IU's running opera, the "H.M.S. Pinafore," premiered in 1878 with the text by William Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan.

Hoosiers torpedo to top at Speedo Series

This year's Speedo Champions Series Central Zone Section 3 meet, held in the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center, saw IU swimmers finish atop both the men and women's divisions. Sophomore John Kevin Koehler captured the men's point title with 110, while Junior Clarissa Wentworth swam away with the women's title, carrying a total score of 90.

American track and field often focuses more on "the human side" than on the actual competition and the athletes. Shuttle dilemma has NASA scrambling

SPACE CENTER, Houston -- A couple of short strips of filler material dangling from Discovery's belly had NASA scrambling Sunday to determine whether the protrusions might endanger the space shuttle during re-entry and whether the astronauts might need to attempt a repair.

Kelley professors weigh in on new dean

Gunning for grandpa

Two weeks ago in Arizona, five anti-war senior citizens entered a military recruitment office, asking to enlist in the army so their children and grandchildren could come home. Last week, the Pentagon asked Congress to raise the maximum age for new enlistees by seven years to access the older population.

In the old familiar game of boys versus girls, the girls are still losing. Yet things are looking up. Interest groups around the world have identified this stagnant trend and have finally decided to do something about it. From the creation of the New Generation of Republican Women right here in Indiana -- a professional women's group dedicated to involving women in all aspects of the political process -- to Norway's legislative ruling requiring all businesses to have at least two women on their board of directors, women are gaining ground.

Misleading ratings

The controversial video game, "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" has unraveled so much debate, that its new rating (Adults Only) has infringed on many stores' ability to sell it. The "AO" rating comes after the realization that by downloading an Internet "mod," sexually explicit scenes can be unlocked only on the PC version of the game. These sexually explicit scenes caused for the rating to be changed from Mature to Adult Only. Rockstar Games, the maker of the GTA series, plans to release a "clean" version of San Andreas soon.

Superstitions and baseball: So happy together

Baseball and superstitions have been entwined since the first day the game was ever played, which is well described in the book of Genesis, if I'm not mistaken. Superstitions in baseball have long included not touching the foul lines when you run off the field, and avoiding speaking to or even making eye contact with a pitcher in the middle of perfect game or no-hitter.

Players stay sharp in summer league

Awards, securing starting spots and pitching regularly. Despite these three accomplishments, IU baseball players feel they can still improve their game. Seniors Jay Brant, Clint Crosier and Ryan Parker, who all had a role in IU's season last year, are now staying in shape by playing in summer baseball leagues.

What we can learn from kids

What is it about kids? Yes, they can be cute and adorable sometimes. But it's their young minds that fascinate me. They don't comprehend the same things that occupy us old folks, and they sometimes could honestly care less about them most of the time.
