The business section of Friday's New York Times asked, "How long should white collar criminals be jailed?" Many recent offenders have been sentenced to anywhere from 15 to 30 years in prison for corporate crimes. Jonathon Simon, a professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, told The Times that such sentences are "draconian" and "25 years is more than most people would get for rape or non-aggravated murder."

Culture wars

I recently watched the debut of a new sitcom. I haven't watched an episode of any non-animated network comedy for a long time, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The show is called "The War at Home," and it makes me sad.

IUSA halfway there, not far enough

Spielberg's Holocaust foundation films on display at Evansville library

EVANSVILLE -- A collection of Holocaust survivors' testimonies, filmed as a memorial to the millions who lost their lives in the Nazi-run death camps of World War II, has become an educational resource to teach cultural acceptance. Universities and libraries in recent years have begun using the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation's film archives to compile their own collections of survivor testimonies that chronicle the horrors of Adolf Hitler's concentration camps.

Landmark Afghan elections hailed as success despite threats from Taliban

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Some filed into schools to cast their ballots amid lessons still scrawled on blackboards. Others stepped over piles of shoes to vote in mosques. In remote areas, tents served as polling stations. Across Afghanistan, millions of people lined up at polling stations in defiance of a Taliban boycott call and militant attacks to vote for a new parliament Sunday.

Hoosier journeys to Washington for peace

Shelley Newby will walk 540 miles from New Castle, Ind., to Washington, D.C., to demonstrate her commitment to peace, a journey she started Sept. 3. Her walk for peace will take her through four states on her way to complete her journey by Oct. 13. Newby wears a small white piece of cloth pinned to her backpack with "walking for peace" scrawled across it.

Official: New Orleans' health care system faces unmatched crisis

Conservative party wins most votes in German election

BERLIN -- Conservative challenger Angela Merkel's party won the most votes in German elections Sunday but fell short of a clear mandate to govern, according to official results. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder staged a dramatic comeback and proclaimed he should head the next government.

Assimilating Asian Pacific Americans choose between fitting in, retaining culture

When Cheng-yi Liu's father, Keng-she, was in elementary school, his teachers struggled with the pronunciation of his name so they decided to call him "Fred." Name changes are one of many issues surrounding the assimilation of immigrants and their families. Nearly 20 students of various ethnicities met in a crowded room Friday afternoon at the Asian Culture Center to discuss "What's in a name?"

Anti-gay remarks found written on sidewalk

The IU Police Department was called to investigate anti-gay remarks written in chalk on sidewalks Thursday at Seventh Street and Woodlawn Avenue. A University employee contacted IUPD to complain of the "insensitive remarks," which made anti-gay statements against the Sigma Chi fraternity, said IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger.

Graduate group readies constitution

A new document awaiting approval could give graduate students more money, better working conditions and a union to fight for them one day. The Graduate Employees Organization began casting ballots to ratify its constitution at its first mass meeting Thursday night.

Katrina relief efforts in Dunn Meadow fall short of expected $15,000 goal

Cool temperatures and overcast skies hindered the fund-raising efforts of the IU Hurricane Katrina Relief Program, which raised less than a quarter of its targeted goal at Friday's Hurricane Katrina Relief Festival. Coordinators of the festival named bad weather as the primary reason for not meeting their $15,000 goal. Festival co-coordinator and junior Natalie Borg said while nearly 1,000 students came through Dunn Meadow during the six-hour festival, the inclimate weather kept them from staying for any length of time or spending much money.

Trustees review enrollment figures

Despite the considerable amount of discussion devoted to the athletics department's new financial plan, trustees also debated new enrollment figures, delayed a vote on the proposed site of the new Honors College and heard presentations by the new student trustee and IU Student Association president Friday.

One 'Transporter' is enough

Way back in 2002, "The Transporter" was a pretty good movie. It had the perfect blend of car chases through scenic France, not-too-crazy martial arts fisticuffs and appropriately interesting characters.It was shot with the finesse of a good martial arts movie and came with the right kind of charm to make it appealing. Now picture all of that, and toss it completely out the window. That's "The Transporter 2."

Student ambassadors reach out to prospective minority students

In 2004, about 4 percent of the student body was black, 3 percent was Asian and 2 percent was Hispanic. For more than a decade, IU has been tapping a few dozen of these minority students to recruit other racial minorities to IU in order to maintain and increase diversity.

Hoosiers host T.I.S. Invitational

The IU women's volleyball team will host the T.I.S. Bookstore Invitational starting today coming off a 2-1 finish at the Winthrop Invitational last weekend. The Hoosiers will face Western Michigan University at 7 p.m. Friday before moving on to play Arkansas State University and the University of Dayton Saturday.
