Bush to deliver State of Union address tonight

Scripps Howard Foundation Wire WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush will attempt to get his presidency back on track tonight after coming off what some have called his worst year yet as president. He will also attempt the even bigger task of laying out a platform for the midterm elections.

IUPD responds to pair of assaults during weekend

A female reported to the IU Police Department that she was sexually assaulted by a nonstudent in a "party-like atmosphere" in the Delta Kappa Epsilon house early Sunday morning, said Lt. Jerry Minger, reading from the police report. At about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, officers met with the victim at Bloomington Hospital after she had submitted to a sexual assault evidence collection.

Irish pubs offer rich cultural experience to student

The night starts slow. People steadily pour through the old wooden doors of McDonagh's Pub. Soccer plays on the television in the background. A group of old men laugh as they play a game of darts, arguing now and then about the score. It is a normal Wednesday night in Dalkey, Ireland. A man strolls in quietly, singing to himself, "When Irish eyes are smiling, sure 'tis like the morn in spring. In the lilt of Irish laughter, you can hear the angels sing ..."

Magazine accepting student submissions

Student artists and writers looking to have their work published have the opportunity in Canvas, the Union Board-sponsored fine arts magazine. Photography, paintings, poetry and short fiction pieces are typical submissions to the magazine, which comes out once a semester, but the publication isn't limited to that type of work, said senior Karolyn Steffens, assistant director of Canvas. "We'll consider any kind of visual art that people want to send in," she said. The magazine is completely student-run and a selections committee comprised of several students, not just art students, decides which submitted pieces will run.

Chronicler of American feminism dies of cancer

NEW YORK -- Playwright Wendy Wasserstein, who celebrated women confronting feminism, careers, love and motherhood in such works as "The Heidi Chronicles" and "The Sisters Rosensweig," died Monday. She was 55. Wasserstein, who had been battling cancer in recent months, died at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Andre Bishop, head of Lincoln Center Theater and Wasserstein's close friend and mentor, said the cause of death was lymphoma. "She was an extraordinary human being whose work and whose life were extremely intertwined," Bishop said. "She was not unlike the heroines of most of her plays -- a strong-minded, independent, serious good person." Wasserstein's writing was known for its sharp, often wry observations about what women had to do to succeed in a world dominated by men.

The Badgers have spent more time atop the Big Ten than anyone, but evened the field this weekend when they lost in Michigan. Normally Wisconsin would be considered unbeatable at home, but North Dakota State gave everyone hope when it upset the Badgers in the Kohl Center. Kammron "Chris Rock" Taylor has joined Alando Tucker to provide an ample one-two punch on offense, but the attack has been streaky all season.

The art of chocolate

A chiseled statue inspired by the greek god Atlas stood covered in chocolate. Without warning, he moved. Dave Naze, an assistant instructor in the IU Department of Communication and Culture, said he'd never before been covered in chocolate, but described playing Atlas as an exciting, liberating experience.

Hoosiers drop road game to Spartans

Coming off a dominating home win against Illinois last Thursday, the IU women's basketball team traveled to No. 16 Michigan State Sunday in hopes of jumping further ahead in the Big Ten standings. The Hoosiers stuck with the Spartans for most of the game and held a lead as late as 6:10 in the second half, but ultimately lost 65-59.

Offense seems lost in offensive loss

There are plenty of words to describe the Hoosiers' performance Sunday -- uninspired, undisciplined, sloppy, embarrassing. But there are fewer reasons for why it happened. Minnesota out-rebounded, out-hustled and simply outplayed IU in an awful 61-42 road loss for the Hoosiers in which they were held to just 32 percent shooting from the floor.

No. 15 Hoosiers drop weekend series to Illini, Hawkeyes

With No. 3 Illinois and No. 7 Iowa coming into Bloomington during the weekend, the IU wrestling team knew it was going to face some tough wrestlers. The No. 15 Hoosiers hoped to exploit some of the individual match-ups, but in the end those match-ups caused their first two losses of the season. The Hoosiers began the weekend falling to the Illini 26-6 Friday, then dropped their match against the Hawkeyes Sunday 30-12. In both dual meets, the Hoosiers took early advantages with wins by senior Joe Dubuque.

Hardy to sit out this season, future in basketball still undecided

Sophomore forward James Hardy will sit out the 2005-06 season to recover from injuries incurred during the 2005 IU football season, the IU Athletics Department announced Friday. He is unsure about his future in basketball.

Swim team struggles against ranked Big Ten opponents

The No. 15 IU women's swimming and diving team split a two-day double dual meet with No. 14 Penn State and Ohio State. The Nittany Lions toppled the Hoosiers 197.5-152.5, while IU defeated host Ohio State 199-151. The split moves the Hoosiers to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in Big Ten play.
