5 college basketball players shot

PITTSBURGH -- Five Duquesne University basketball players, all but one of them new players who enrolled only this month, were shot early Sunday morning during an apparent act of random violence on campus. Two players were in critical condition at a hospital.

Facebook was thrust into the spotlight once again this week after statements revealed the company's intent to take the site public. Soon, Facebook is expected to announce that membership, originally limited to college students (though later expanded to include high school students and employees of some companies) will now be available to the general public. Soon only a valid e-mail address will be required when registering for an account, with new users being grouped by region.

Shoppers change their buying habits after E. coli contamination of spinach

LOS ANGELES -- Shoppers changed their buying habits Saturday as spinach was pulled from grocery store shelves because of the outbreak of E. coli bacteria that had killed one person and sickened more than 100 others.

Deadly E. coli outbreak traced to bagged spinach spreads to ninth state

WASHINGTON - Federal health officials worked Friday to find the source of a multistate E. coli outbreak and warned consumers -- including those Indiana -- that even washing the suspect spinach won't kill the sometimes-deadly bacteria.

Harnessing Hope

Five-year-old Magdalena Loring, who goes by Maggie, was adopted from Guatemala at age 2. By the time she was 4, her new parents found that their little girl had fetal alcohol syndrome and apraxia, a neural speech disorder, causing poor coordination and problems with learning. Her mother, Vicki Loring, said when she learned of the devastating and irreversible effects of the syndrome, she looked for an alternative therapy method to help Maggie. Last October, the Lorings found Parent and Animal Learning Services, a program that gives therapeutic horseback riding lessons to people with disabilities. Private donations and grants help the nonprofit organization, which gives lessons mostly to children but has several adults who come as well. Three full-time staff and as many as 150 weekly volunteers, about 80 percent of whom are IU students, run the program, said Jan Gavin, the program's director of development.

With news that IU coach Terry Hoeppner recovering with his family following brain surgery, the dark cloud hovering over the Hoosier football program faded away some Wednesday. And with its third game of the season coming up Saturday against Southern Illinois University, the IU football team (2-0) is not letting its coach's surgery be a distraction.

IU places second in home tournament, loses to Maryland in finale

University of Maryland volleyball player Teryn Papp returned to her native town of Bloomington to spoil the previously undefeated IU women's volleyball season. Papp and the Terrapins won the TIS Bookstore Tournament this weekend by defeating IU, Chicago State University and Marshall University to take the crown. The Hoosiers, who hosted the tournament, took second.

Buskirk-Chumley hosts free showing of 'The Ground Truth'

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will present a free screening of "The Ground Truth," a documentary that follows men and women who served the American military in the Iraq war, according to the film's Web site. The movie shows the journey through recruitment, training, combat and homecoming and chronicles the soldiers' process of reintegrating with their families and communities.
