Big Ten weekend with the boys of IU

I was totally focused on beating the Penn State Nittany Lions in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament last Friday. They had defeated us three times in a row, and we were out for revenge. Beating them would end their season, and that would be almost as satisfying as winning the Big Ten Tournament.

2 Hoosiers reach semifinals in Singles Championships

IU senior David Bubenicek fell in the finals, but junior Dara McLoughlin advanced to the semifinals of the men's tennis Big Ten Singles Championship, hosted by Michigan. The host team's player, Matko Maravic, defeated McLoughlin in the semifinals 6-1, 6-2 and then prevailed against Bubenicek 6-3, 6-2 to take home the championship Monday.

An Eponymous Squeegee? (OK, we made that last one up.)

The Chilean film "Fernando Has Returned" features the workings of Chile's Identification Unit as it attempts to identify all the bodies of the "disappeared" persons during the Pinochet dictatorship. The movie is one of many Latin American films that professor and Director of Portuguese studies Darlene Sadlier features in her communication and culture class, C398: National Cinemas: Latin American Film.

Class connects music to AIDS epidemic

Although the graduate seminar, provided by the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, might appear like a music course, it looks solely at -- as the name suggests -- "Musical Responses to the AIDS Pandemic."

Club plans full-length film

The Business Careers in Entertainment Club is out to show students and faculty why the group was recently voted IU's "Best Student Organization" by WEEKEND readers. The club is preparing to produce a full-length film, and although it will not be "coming soon to a theater near you," the script might be written by a student near you.

15 venomous snakes seized from man's home

5 killed in plane crash

ROLLING PRAIRIE, Ind. -- Federal and local authorities worked Tuesday to recover the remains of four employees of an Iowa marketing company and a pilot killed in a small plane crash in a rural area of northern Indiana, officials said.
