IU Pools prepare for summer crowd

As the weather warms up, there is anticipation for summer activities. IU provides three pools on campus for the public, IU students, faculty and staff. The two indoor pools are the six-lane Royer Pool at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center and the eight-lane, Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center at the Student Recreational Sports Center.

IU alumnus to receive Asia/Pacific American Alumni Award

When Yoshito Kawahara was younger, he was forced to live in an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. More than six decades later, Kawahara has made a name for himself as a role model for the Asian community, and for his efforts he will be receiving the second Distinguished Asian/Pacific American Alumni Award, recognizing him for his achievements in the professional world and in his community.

U.S. Officer faces allegations of aiding the enemy

BAGHDAD – A senior U.S. officer has been charged with nine offenses, including aiding the enemy and fraternizing with the daughter of a detainee while he commanded a military police detachment at the American detention facility where Saddam Hussein had been held, the military said Thursday.

Abused children honored at vigil

A crowd sought shelter from the rain Thursday night as 57 T-shirts swung dripping on a clothes line outside. The small shirts featured words such as “gunshot,” “neglect” and “beaten.” They represented the 57 children who died as child abuse victims in the state of Indiana during 2005.

NCAA approves text messaging ban to begin in August

College coaches will have to recruit the old-fashioned way next year. The NCAA’s board of directors approved a ban Thursday to eliminate all text messages from coaches to recruits beginning in August, then left open the possibility of revisiting that legislation as early as 2008.

NEW DELHI – A court issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on Thursday, saying their kiss at a public function “transgressed all limits of vulgarity,” media reports said.

Colleges asked to rethink ranking systems

NEW YORK – A nonprofit organization is asking universities to help eliminate or at least alter the ways magazines rank colleges. A letter citing problems with the ranking systems was sent to 16 liberal arts college presidents by the Education Conservancy, an Oregon-based nonprofit organization. Eleven of the college presidents have already signed the letter, and once 12 have signed it, it will be sent to numerous universities.

Slumping Hoosiers looking for victory

Time is ticking…fast. As the IU softball team gets set for a road trip to visit Ohio State and Penn State, they find themselves in desperate need of a win if they are to qualify for the Big Ten tournament. The top eight teams in the conference advance to postseason play and with six games remaining in the regular season, the Hoosiers are currently in last place with a conference record of 1-13 and a 21-28 overall record.

Going into this weekend’s home series with Penn State, one thing is pretty evident. The IU baseball team had better start winning some games. Good, now I have the obvious stuff out of the way.
