As dollar falls, study abroad costs rise

The declining value of the American dollar is making studying abroad more expensive. The dollar is hitting record lows against the euro. One American dollar buys only 0.69 euros. It also buys 0.48 British pounds. In November 2005, one American dollar bought 0.85 euros or 0.57 pounds.

Students could lose aid over Internet piracy

Two congressmen in the U.S. House of Representatives recently proposed a law that could strip federal financial aid from students. If colleges and universities do not follow the proposed methods of preventing illegal file sharing, the federal financial aid could disappear.

New bill could force stores to reduce costs of textbooks

Members of Congress have proposed a bill that will help ease the burden of buying college textbooks. The Textbook Affordability Act of 2007, sponsored by Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., was introduced March 20 and has yet to be approved by the Senate or House of Representatives, according to the text of the act. The act’s major aim is to ensure that textbooks and supplemental materials are more affordable and accessible for students.

Teach for America to visit IMU today

INDIANAPOLIS – A tire blowout may have caused a van carrying passengers from an Amish community to flip over on a highway, killing three children and two adults, police said Monday. Eleven others were injured in the crash.

Academics vs. athletics

This weekend’s homecoming football game painted a beautiful picture of IU, its athletics program and college sports throughout the NCAA. BOLOGNA, Italy – I have always thought that the winter season and a good sense of fashion were mutually exclusive until I moved here. When the temperature drops, my wardrobe usually consists of leggings under ripped jeans and an assortment of my boyfriend’s sweatshirts. Style takes a backseat to the need to stay toasty.

IU alumnus Joe Cameron is a singer-songwriter hoping to perform on “The Ellen DeGeneres” show. He has created a Web site, www.imgonnabeonellen.com, in an effort to attract attention from the producers of the comedienne’s talk show. Cameron graduated in 2001.
