North Korea proposed Monday that a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War be signed this year, saying a return to negotiations on its nuclear program depends on better relations with Washington and the lifting of sanctions.

Cleric to stay in Kenyan jail

A radical Muslim cleric whose teachings influenced one of the 2005 London bombers will stay in a Kenyan jail until authorities can send him home, Kenya’s immigration minister said Monday.

Gay rights trial begins

The first federal trial to determine whether the U.S. Constitution prohibits states from outlawing same-sex marriage got under way Monday. Expected to last two to three weeks, the proceedings involve a challenge to Proposition 8, the gay marriage ban approved by California voters in November 2008. Regardless of the outcome, the case will likely be appealed to the Supreme Court, where it ultimately could become a landmark case determining if gay Americans have the right to marry.

Opera students move one step closer to Met

The performance Saturday on the stage of the MAC was the annual Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for the Indiana District. The auditions, which occur annually in 15 regions of the United States and Canada, included 23 total performers who sang one to five arias in their respective voice parts.

Hoosiers miss the mark against Illini

Professor murdered, mourned

The murder surfaced 10 a.m. Dec. 28, when a colleague found IU assistant English professor Don Belton dead, face down on the kitchen floor in his home. She had tried calling him the night before, but there was no answer.

IU junior loved company of others

Jonathan Herz, an IU junior, was described as a social butterfly of the Chicago North Shore and was known to make friends with basically everyone he met. Herz died Dec. 17 from a self-inflicted injury at his residence in Smallwood Plaza.

Mel Simon's daughter contests father's will

Deborah Simon filed a will contest Thursday in Hamilton County Superior Court. She claims her father, Mel Simon, couldn’t sign a new agreement himself.
