This one's for Joe

The two weeks of class after Thanksgiving Break are two of the toughest for me. And it's not because I have a lot of work or because I'm anxious about the finals I have to take. The two weeks really just make me think about Joe Bisanz.

$120 too steep for a free bus ride

Student leaders on a Transit Team are reevaluating the bus plan the board of trustees passed in 1999. The students discovered the plan would cost students much more than was originally estimated, and they are exploring other options to avoid instituting a mandatory $120 transportation fee yearly for all students. The team will decide Dec. 6 if it should redraft the proposal -- and it should do so. Their exploration of the issue -- and a new plan for bus transportation on this campus -- are sorely needed. The proposed expense for students is simply too high. Compared to tuition and other fees students pay, $120 might seem like a drop in the bucket, but for many, it isn't.

Board seeks new student trustee

Applications for the student position on IU's board of trustees will be available Tuesday, Dec. 5. Any full-time IU student may apply for the position, which begins July 1 and lasts two years. The student trustee must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student for the duration of the appointment.

Team to review bus plan

The University is looking at revamping the universal transportation plan approved by the trustees in 1999, student leaders said. The plan would have provided free bus service around Bloomington to students and added a $21.50 mandatory transportation fee to bursar bills.

RHA, Eigenmann group to merge

The Residence Halls Association and Eigenmann Residents Association decided Tuesday to include Eigenmann residents in RHA with the 10 other dorms on campus. The votes amended the constitutions of both organizations. RHA President Jason Dudich, a senior, said RHA members overwhelmingly voted in favor of the referendum, and Eigenmann, only needing a 20 percent consensus, approved the motion with 15 in favor and 25 opposed.

Hoosiers look to bounce back from 2 losses

Sophomore guard Kyle Hornsby said the Hoosiers like to think they're "supposed to" beat everybody. Last year, IU was "supposed to" beat Indiana State in the championship game of the Ameritech/Indiana Classic and lost 63-60, giving the Sycamores their first win in the series since 1924. It was the first time since the tournament began in 1974 that the Hoosiers did not win the championship. The two teams will meet again at 8 p.m. today in the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

I am sure everyone was upset that there was no IDS last Wednesday. Along with TNN not being available in the residence halls and a two-week drought between columns, this one should be highly anticipated.

Faculty Council meeting addresses 1994 grade forgiveness policy, current problems

A discrepancy in the grading system at IU surfaced during the Bloomington Faculty Council meeting Tuesday. Robert Eno, associate professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures and a member of the educational policies committee, said the new grade forgiveness policy the Council passed in 1994 still has not been implemented and will not be for three or four more years.

Story misrepresents Muslim holy month

The evolution of cigarettes

Cigarettes. Over break I was reminded of a story a faculty member told me. Around the holidays, Herman B Wells used to deliver apples and nuts to some IU departments. For a few years, he delivered cigars.

What would Mom do?

My mother's standard advice -- her answer to everything -- is to get some rest. If she had her way, the ills of the world, the Middle Eastern conflict, the pains of hunger and the lack of faith would be solved by a hot beverage and a recliner.

Time to concede

Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris certified Florida's election results Sunday, declaring Texas Gov. George W. Bush the winner of the state's 25 electoral votes by a margin of 537 votes. But the battle, unfortunately, seems far from over.

'Best lists' never a hit with everyone

Whenever a "best list" is compiled, it always manages to stir up some conversation. It is impossible to find a best list that is indisputable -- everyone has an opinion.
