Life with NAFTA learned the hard way

·

Maria is a lot like other parents I know. Family is what is most important to her and she is adamant that her children will have a better life than she has had. But her situation is different. She is one of several thousands of returned refugee peasant farmers in Guatemala who wage a daily struggle for the necessities most of us take for granted, such as medicine, food and clean water.

Horowitz has another agenda in ad

·

The IDS decision to run the David Horowitz advertisement, "Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Slavery is a Bad Idea -- and Racist Too," has sparked anger among the University's minority graduate students. The newspaper has claimed that refusing the ad would be a violation of its charter requiring it to allow the input of all sides in a debate.

NBA will thrive under new rules

Last Thursday, the team owners in the National Basketball Association approved a package of rule changes that would, among other things, eliminate the long-standing ban on zone defense. The changes also reduce the amount of time a team will have to advance the ball past midcourt from 10 seconds to eight seconds.

Randle El looks to the future

·

Antwaan Randle El hasn't lined up under center except for a few times this spring. He's played strictly receiver for the first three weeks of spring practice and finally took some snaps last week. Is he rusty? Nowhere near it. In Saturday's Red-White Spring Game, two defenders for the white team jump offsides, busting through the line almost before Randle El takes the snap. He spins left, circles right and leaves the two men in white grasping air, the distance between them and him growing. "'Twaan," as many call him, nears the line of scrimmage, still running to his right, and fires a pass back toward the middle of field.

Student struck by car, dies

·

Accompanying her parents to football and basketball games, Berkley Branson fell in love with IU at a young age. Strolling around campus and into various buildings and sorority houses with her parents, both alumni, proved fascinating to the ambitious youngster. It was an easy decision to attend IU, and she entered IU in the fall of 2000 as an education major.

Sex advice online

·

Sex can be an embarassing subject, and often students don't know where to turn for advice. One of the biggest problems students face is where to go for reliable advice, said Jennifer Bass, director of Information Services at the Kinsey Institute. The organization tries to fill that void for IU students through the Internet.

'Pirates of Penzance\' full of pizazz, humor

·

As a little boy attending my first live musical, I marveled wide-eyed at the whole performance, taking in as much as a 6-year-old out late on a school night could. But when the "Boy's Band" came marching down the aisles with their 76 trombones, my excitement for the magic of musical theater was at the height of its potency.

Changes needed in police policies

·

Cincinnati police shot and killed an unarmed black man April 7, according to ABC News. Actually, because Timothy Thomas was only 19 years old, I should say an unarmed black teenager. Thomas was running from police because he was wanted for a few misdemeanors and traffic tickets -- a hardened criminal indeed.

Little 500 weekend has been called the "greatest college weekend of all time." Students, alumni -- everyone -- come to Bloomington to partake in the festivities.
