Women's team plays better in pairs

·

With the women's tennis team heading toward the end of regular season play, it is hard not to see the biggest strength of the team. In fact, you would be seeing double. IU's doubles play has become the backbone of the squad. The three doubles combinations have come on strong, winning the last 11 points, the last loss coming March 11 against Illinois.

Behrman's presence felt through award

·

She might be missing, but she is definitely not forgotten. Jill Behrman, a 19-year-old who had just finished her freshman year at IU, was reported missing nearly a year ago. Despite the Bloomington native's absence, Jill's presence can be felt throughout the community. From Run to the Endzone to the First United Methodist Church, many groups are uniting behind this tragedy.

'Asian Invasion' takes baseball by storm

·

Throughout the past half-century, the United States and Japan have made several trades that have benefited both nations. Among the items the Japanese exported to the good old U.S. of A: quality electronic equipment, karaoke, Godzilla movies and, on a more regrettable note, Pokemon.

Senior managers make their mark

·

Perhaps softball coach Diane Stephenson best summarizes the importance of senior managers Matt Nocks and Leslie Shaffer to the team.

Hoosiers capture sweep in flawless performance

·

Dominating defense, flawless pitching and clutch hitting. For most of its season, the softball squad has wondered where these have been. IU (15-32) found them Tuesday at the IU Softball Field, in its first series sweep of the season in a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) 1-0, 3-2.

Viewers encouraged to tune out

·

It's halfway through National TV-Turnoff Week, an annual grassroots event. Organizers hope viewers will skip out on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and "Survivor" in favor of community-based activities. The Monroe County Green Party has planned several local events to publicize the movement, including a Wednesday nature walk and a family game night Friday.

Around The Campus

Address change deadline nears May 8 is the last day for students to submit changes in their permanent home addresses to the Office of the Registrar for mailing of second semester grades. Students can also update their address online at www.insite.indiana.edu. Changes made online must be completed by May 9 to guarantee mailing to the new address.

University lifts nursing school requirement for time at IUPUI

Nursing students on the Bloomington campus will now be able to complete their degrees on their home campus. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education approved changes to IU's nursing program last week that will eliminate the requirement for students to complete their senior year at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis.

Local students juggle classes, business

Money is not an issue that Chad and Andy Baker need to worry about. "Our parents separated when we were young and we never had an abundance of money to play with, so we decided to make our own," Andy said, as he lounged in his three-bedroom apartment, which the two bought and renovated.

Ad's rhetoric skewed

·

This letter is a response to the "advertisement," "Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Slavery Is a Bad Idea-- and Racist Too," by David Horowitz, published by the IDS April 13. My response should be titled "Horowitz's Advertisement Against Reparations Is a Bad Idea-- and Racist Too."

The Indiana Daily Student

Reparations a tough case to support

·

Bravo for printing the Horowitz ad against reparations. The ad makes some very valid points. Just because some people don't like the content, or the point of view, doesn't mean it should not have been published. Some people are for free speech or free press only if you agree with their point of view. Otherwise, they try to stifle your voice, steal the papers and try to play the race card.

The Indiana Daily Student

Slave descendants deserve reparations

·

There are many specious ideas backed by incomplete and even invented "facts" in David Horowitz's "ad." I won't attempt to address all of those errors and insults. Contrary to Mr. Horowitz's view, it seems to me that the quest for reparations by African Americans is primarily an effort to gain full admittance into all facets of life in this country, once and for all. The demand for reparations is not a demand for mere dollars and cents payment to every native-born African American in this country.

The Indiana Daily Student

Reparations would even playing field for races

·

I am disappointed and saddened with the decision of the IDS to run the David Horowitz anti-reparations ad in the April 13 paper. The ad is full of untruths and sophistry. The integrity of the IDS is at stake in providing a paid forum for David Horowitz to promulgate anti-reparations arguments that are factually incorrect.

'IDS' ignores slave history

·

I have a few comments and questions for the staff and managing editor at the IDS. I am sure that a major part of your time was spent researching the topic of slavery before you made the decision to publish the racist (Horowitz) paid ($800) advertisement.

Bathroom etiquette laws

·

Bathrooms are awkward places. I don't think I've ever had a normal experience in a bathroom, and I don't know if there's any such thing as a "normal experience" to be had in a place like that in the first place. There are some people on this campus who make restroom experiences very unpleasant, which is exactly why we must initiate restroom etiquette laws immediately.

International students face unique challenges

·

I came to America to improve my English late last August. It's been eight months since then, and I feel that the America I am looking at now is different from the one I saw at first. I have been influenced by both positive and negative experiences.

A fond farewell

·

This will be my last column as a student journalist. It is a sad, sad day. But do not fear, young readers, for some day someone of my stature shall once again grace the pages of the Indiana Daily Student.

Quiet nights ordinance unreasonable

·

Little 500 is a time for celebrating IU culture and community. For one weekend, Bloomington is alive with a positive energy that infects the whole campus. It excludes no one, discriminates against nothing and rejoices in the college experience that is IU. The races showcase hardworking students and community members who labor yearlong for the glory of winning the race.
