Thirty-four years after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., she says, America is still asking important questions in the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Berry, the controversial chair of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, was the keynote speaker for the campus-wide celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day yesterday in Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Students invited to 'Miss a Meal'

ATMs: Access allowed

Kirkwood debate goes over time

After debating an ordinance outlining the plans for the future of West Kirkwood Avenue for more than five hours, an exhausted Bloomington City Council gave preliminary approval to the plan, which is aimed at stimulating development in an eight-block section between Adams and Rogers streets.

Punk can be a very limited music form. Very few punk bands are able to expand their sound and style very far. Those punk groups that do manage to transcend the genre end up creating a whole now identity for themselves. Kirkwood wins race

After nearly three weeks of controversy, the IU Student Association election is finally over. Campaigning with the slogan "work hard, play hard," the Kirkwood ticket emerged as the winning ticket. Joe Walterman, Elections Commissioner, said six of the 11 Supreme Court justices have certified the following vote count: 3,184 for Kirkwood, 2,030 for Synergy and 2,000 for Steel.

Jeffries explodes for career high

With 6 minutes, 41 seconds remaining in IU's home opener against Notre Dame Tuesday, Jared Jeffries picked up his fourth foul. IU led by five, and it appeared Jeffries would retreat to the Hoosier bench. He didn't. He knew he wouldn't. And it's a good thing. Jeffries' career-high 28 points, including five during a two-minute stretch, helped IU (5-2) fend off the Fighting Irish (7-1) for a 76-75 victory that jump-started the hearts of an Assembly Hall sellout crowd of 17,456. "I knew coach wasn't going to take me out," Jeffries said. "I know he has confidence in me and how smart I am out on the court." Jeffries was just that, with IU holding a 63-58 edge.

Healing with prayer

Attacks on Carter wrong

Former President Jimmy Carter got ambushed last week. Carter has done nothing but good for the disadvantaged peoples of the world since leaving the presidency in 1981. But he was treated like a political chew toy by those who wished to discredit his trip to Cuba, which advocated freedom for the Cuban people and a lifting of the United States' embargo.
