Is the world so desperate?

I have a secret passion for the show "Desperate Housewives." Yes, it looks raunchy and silly and slutty. I thought the same thing, but I started watching and I got hooked. You may think it is a "chick show" or just a sleazy soap opera but I will vouch that it is probably one of the best television shows out there.

Professor wins international award for achievements

School of Public and Environmental Affairs professor Patrick O'Meara will receive The Founder's (Casey) Award for Distinguished Achievement in Higher Education Planning. The award comes from The Society for College and University Planning, which is a 40-year-old international association. SCUP has nearly 5,000 members from universities, colleges, other instituions and consulting firms from the U.S. and 28 other countries.

'Baby' DVD a knockout

Roberts grew up in Indiana; nominee awaits Senate

WASHINGTON -- President Bush named federal appeals court judge John G. Roberts Jr. to a seat on the Supreme Court Tuesday, delighting Republicans while unsettling some Democrats with the selection of a young jurist with impeccable conservative credentials. "John Roberts has devoted his entire professional life to the cause of justice," Bush said in a prime-time announcement at the White House, "and is widely admired for his intellect his sound judgment and his personal decency."

Students face larger class sizes

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education are likely to see bigger class sizes, more graduate student-taught classes and smaller classes nixed altogether, said Neil Theobald, the vice chancellor for budgetary administration and planning. The two schools cut 35 faculty positions to make up for a more than $11 million budget shortfall at the Bloomington campus.

Scared to death

Danny Jackson entered Phi Kappa Tau on move-in day. He was the first pledge to move in -- no one else was in the house, unbeknownst to him. So, when he heard the sound of footsteps drudging down the stairs, he wasn't surprised. Jackson approached the source of the sound, calling out "Who's there, who's there?," looking for his fellow house mates. He rounded the corner toward the stairs and the sound stopped. He saw nothing and froze. The touch of a hand rested on Jackson's shoulder sending him into a seizure. His brothers found him soon after and helped him to the Health Center.

Walk gives mosque support

Members of several Bloomington churches and faiths staged a Walk and Prayer for Peace and Solidarity on Sunday afternoon in response to the hate crime against the Bloomington Islamic Center. The walk, which was created in conjunction with an open house being held at the Islamic Center, began at the IU Outdoor Pool on Fee Lane, and ended at the Islamic Center, located on Atwater Avenue, where prayers, comments and feelings were shared among the various members of differing faiths and backgrounds.

IU alumnus makes it big in World Series of Poker

When alumnus Adam Friedman left IU in May of 2004, he was taking a year off to decide what he wanted to do with his life. Now that he has taken 43rd in the No-Limit Texas Hold'em event at the 2005 World Series of Poker and won more than $235,000, he said what he plans to do may have nothing to do with that degree he got from the Kelley School of Business.

Police arrest hit-and-run suspect

Investigations continue in a hit-and-run case involving Kevin Moore, 35, a Bedford resident charged with battery and arrested for leaving the scene of car accident which killed Robin Pfister, according to the Bloomington Herald Times.

Bush speaks to Black Expo

INDIANAPOLIS - The 35th annual Indiana Black Expo gave President George W. Bush a chance to regain ground with black voters since he chose not to speak at the last five NAACP conventions. Bush received a standing ovation upon his entrance to the RCA dome from a crowd of about 3,000 people, where he later received the lifetime achievement award.
