When is national news local?

·

We treat the front page of the Indiana Daily Student as a coveted spot for which editors and writers must compete. The front page stories are the first stories you see, and subsequently we consider them the most immediate and most interesting stories in the newspaper. And without fail, every semester one of the most hotly contested issues among IDS staff members is the appropriateness of putting national and world news on the front page of a college newspaper.

IU gamers find solace in LAN war competition

·

Joystick. Check. Starcraft. Check. Can of Bawls. Bawls? Bawls. Check. Welcome to the world of computer gamers, a much maligned society of technically-inclined individuals who, at IU, come together twice a year to engage in a most unique test of stamina: 24-plus hours of continuous game play at parties called LAN wars. "We would like to dispel the myth that computer gamers are anti-social people," Evan Schwamb said of the large crowds that attend the parties for both competition and camaraderie.

Liberia votes for 1st post-war leader

·

MONROVIA, Liberia -- With U.N. tanks and troops standing guard, Liberians waited in long lines Tuesday to vote for the country's first postwar president, who many hope will bring stability to one of Africa's most turbulent countries. Turnout appeared to be strong, with some voters lining up hours before the polls opened in churches, schools and long-shuttered banks. Many sat on benches or huddled under umbrellas to shelter them from the broiling tropical sun.

Questioning beauty

·

For junior Ashley Morton, the list of qualities an ideal partner must have is short and to the point. "Personality, smart, funny and attractive," she said counting off the attributes on her fingers. While Morton's list rings true with most people, one item on it has been the focus of scholars, academics and artists for centuries: attractiveness, also known as beauty.

Kids need a home

·

Last week, State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, proposed a bill to ban gays and single people from using medical technology to have children. Her rationale for the motion was to harmonize state reproductive laws with state adoption laws. She figured if gays and singles aren't allowed to adopt kids, why should they be allowed to have their own? Happily, this idiotic bill was withdrawn so quickly you would have received whiplash had you tried to read it, but it does open up a line of questions. Why aren't gays and singles allowed to adopt kids?

Internet one-ups TV

·

Imagine you have a choice: ethernet cord or television cable cord. One has to go. If you chose a high-speed Internet connection over cable TV, welcome to the growing number of college students who are leaving the couch for the computer chair. Because of a combination of poor programming -- note the reality television phenomenon -- and college students' busy schedules, TV ratings in the college-age demographic are on the decline. Internet use, on the other hand, is way up. IU students who still spend hours in front of the television should note the trend and turn off the boob tube.
