IU volleyball readies for a pair of home Big Ten matches

This weekend, the IU volleyball team will face both Michigan State and Northwestern, two teams situated at the lower end of the Big Ten standings. Friday at 7 p.m., IU will have the pleasure of opening Hoosier Hysteria as they will take on the Spartans at Assembly Hall.

IU womens soccer ready to welcome Minnesota, Iowa this weekend

This weekend’s matches against Minnesota and Iowa will mark the last two Big Ten home games for the IU women’s soccer team this season. The Hoosiers are currently receiving the second-highest number of votes among unranked teams in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, and are ranked 12th in the first Ratings Percentage Index rankings released for 2007. The RPI rankings help the selection committee determine which teams receive at-large bids to the NCAA tournament.

IU mens soccer looks to rebound

The IU men’s soccer team travels to Evanston, Ill., this weekend to take on the No. 6-ranked Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday. The No. 13-ranked Hoosiers (7-4-1, 2-0) will face Northwestern (9-1-1, 2-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday, looking to rebound from a 2-1 loss to Louisville on Wednesday, their first-ever loss to the Cardinals.

The clock is winding down at the end of the game, and the other team is barely ahead. All may seem lost, but junior kicker Austin Starr couldn’t think of a better time to display what he does best and prove he has ice water running through his veins.

Joey Crawford officiated his first NBA exhibition game Wednesday night after being suspended for the end of last season and the playoffs for improper on-court conduct.

A new set of traditions

Bowl eligibility isn’t the only thing at stake for the Hoosiers this weekend. The winner of the IU-Michigan State game this Saturday will come away with one of the lesser-known rivalry trophies in college football – the Old Brass Spittoon. In addition to the Old Oaken Bucket (Purdue) and the Bourbon Barrel (Kentucky), the Spittoon is one of three traditional rivalry trophies the Hoosiers still play for.

Facebook plans to launch overseas; gain new members

STANFORD, Calif. – With more than 45 million active members, social networking giant Facebook.com does not appear to be in need of new users. However, the Web site will soon be gathering even more members with its foreign language translation, part of what developers call “an ambitious overseas expansion.”

At the last of the official mayoral debates, Democratic incumbent Mayor Mark Kruzan and Republican mayoral candidate David Sabbagh clashed on how to grow business and conserve green space in Bloomington. The event, which was held Thursday night at Ivy Tech Community College, marked the third and final debate between the challengers.
