Beauty and the 'Bots

It's 4:55 p.m. and I'm dialing a secret number. I tell the person on the other end the secret word, and presto, I'm on hold, waiting to talk to Donna D'Errico, feature interviewer on Comedy Central's "BattleBots." It's a show where elite tinkerers come to fight their robots to the death Spartacus-style in front of a crowd that cheers as their creations get ripped to shreds, spewing gears and buzz saws.

Gaydar Operation 101

I'd rather help you shop for clothing than take it off of you. And best of all, I have superhuman powers. You heard me. It's called gaydar…ever heard of it? If not, don't worry. You're not alone.

Rock and roll all night

The summers are long and rather boring in Bloomington. Not too many people are around, and if you are not 21 or do not have a fake, your options are limited. The only way to survive is to be very creative and be willing to try new experiences.

Band of the week: Blue Moon Revue

They call themselves an original jam band, taking roots from a variety of musical influences like soul and rock. Blue Moon Revue takes its unique jam style to the City Grille Friday, kicking off a string of shows in October. "Jam bands are moving in different directions," sophomore guitarist Andy Salge said. "I feel with the variety our members bring to the band, we've developed our own original style."

Chix Rock

Three shows in three days. An estrogen-powered festival with local bands and touring regional acts. Country, electronica, opera, folk, hardcore and rock -- lots of rock. Certainly enough to name a festival after. Bloomington's own Chix Rock festival kicks off tonight and continues through Saturday. While the festival is certainly an opportunity for some of Indiana's most talented ladies to flex their creative muscles, it is also an event centered around nurturing -- a community of care.

WIUS Pick of the week

There must be something about the year 2000 that makes bands want to write songs for other bands to play. Maybe these bands are just happy the world didn't end as a result of the millennium bug and therefore are feeling generous. Whatever the case might be, Metroschifter's Encapsulated is the second album this year, following the 6ths' Hyacinths and Thistles, with the premise that other bands would be doing all the work except actually writing the songs.

Women are pigs: Pageant proves it

Several nights ago I was forced to sit through a TV tragedy, also known as the "First Annual Sexiest Bachelor in America Pageant." By forced, I mean that my female roommate, who we will call Gertrude, had control of the remote and had hidden it somewhere in Russia I believe. I was not feeling particularly motivated and therefore decided to endure this trash rather than lift my bum off the sofa. After watching this debacle, I came to this conclusion: Women are pigs too.

Multi-talented football player finds home on offense, defense

Under position, sophomore Kris Dielman is listed as a defensive tackle. In the picture alongside his career statistics, Dielman is hauling in a reception as a tight end. Such is the life of Dielman, who plays both defensive tackle and tight end for IU. He is getting the job done on both sides of the football.

Apartments not for undergrads

It's Friday night and some 6-year-olds are discussing their plans for the weekend. One says hopscotch. Another looks forward to some jump rope. The third plans to download Disney movies off the Internet with the help of her beer-drinking college friends.

Soccer players up for top award

College soccer coaches and media members decided before this season that IU's Ryan Mack and T.J. Hannig were among the best players in the nation, when both players were named finalists for the Hermann Trophy, an award given to the nation's top player.

For those who live in the dorms and do not get TNN, you missed an exciting Monday Night Raw. This was one of the better episodes I have seen. And with all the superstars in the WWF getting healthy, it will only get better.

Underclassmen fill big shoes

Coach Joe Kelley has had to go to his bench more times than expected this season. The Hoosiers have been plagued with injuries, as five or more starters sat the bench at one time this season. Because those experienced starters are injured, Kelley has had to look toward his younger, less experienced players to pick up the slack. Of the four who have stepped in this season, only one is a regular starter, with the second most experience being 10 games played in the 1999 season.

2 home losses leave Hoosiers in Big Ten volleyball quicksand

The Hoosiers were supposed to ruffle the Hawkeyes' feathers then give sixth-ranked Minnesota a run for its money last weekend. Iowa and Minnesota didn't agree.

Tennis players go solo

As the individual season rolls along, the men's tennis team will send players to two tournaments this weekend. Three players will go to Stone Mountain, Ga., for the pre-qualifying round of the All-American tournament. Others will go to Louisville, Ky., for the Louisville Invitational. Senior Paul Jacobson, junior Rahman Smiley and freshman Bernard Tsepelman will compete in Stone Mountain in a tournament with all the best players in college tennis. The event will be unique, in that it will be crowded and individualized.

Controversial abortion drug coming to Bloomington

Planned Parenthood in Bloomington will be one of the first Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana to carry RU-486, or mifepristone, the new abortion pill recently approved by the FDA. Sylvia Johnson, media coordinator for Planned Parenthood of Greater Indiana, said Planned Parenthood is not sure the exact date when the drug will become available, but that it will offer mifepristone as soon as it is on the market.

Job fair draws hundreds

Dozens of companies ranging from Caterpillar to Charles Schwab to the Central Intelligence Agency flocked to Alumni Hall Tuesday as part of the annual Information Technology Career Fair. Sponsored by the Arts and Sciences Placement Office, this year's fair was the largest ever, with 61 companies.

Religious policy aims for fairness

Last year IU adopted a new policy to handle student complaints of religious discrimination. This new policy, backed by federal law, states "that instructors must reasonably accommodate students who want to observe their religious holidays at times when academic requirements conflict with those observances."

College Republicans promote student involvement

Activism in local politics was the name of the game at Monday evening's College Republicans meeting. Second District City Councilman Jason Banach warned his politically curious young audience, "Don't think the entire city exists between Third and 17th Streets."

Council updated on distance learning

At its Tuesday Meeting, the Bloomington Faculty Council received a report on the possibilities of distance learning -- using technology to teach online courses and make them available to students at other IU campuses, or even students around the world.
