Letters to the editor

·

Carson's wisdom nothing more than misguided ignorance In his response to the IDS editorial opposing Roly Poly moving into the Gables, Glen Carson states that the editors should leave such community decisions to the "wise." I believe that Carson is insinuating that he himself possesses such wisdom.

Scholarships a step forward

·

The idea behind scholarships and grants is to assist students who could not otherwise attend an institution of higher learning. While these aid dollars are certainly a privilege, they should be available to anyone who qualifies -- without discrimination.

The fine art of the pickup line

·

While I was at Marsh trying to decide between pretzels and those really good lime tortilla chips, a guy came up to me and said:

Saudi peace plan a dupe

·

The so-called Saudi "peace plan" is a joke that almost the entire world is falling for. It is merely a diversionary tactic to mask real problems in the Middle East.

Snot and chocolate bunnies

·

I hate being sick. But then again, who loves being sick? I've a hard time imagining anyone running around screaming "Woo hoo! I have Malaria!" or "Go me! Typhoid Fever!"

Scholarships not solution

·

Students previously denied federal financial aid because of criminal drug offenses may be able to get to college in spite of the law, thanks to a coalition of drug-law reform groups. Fund raisers met Tuesday in New York to inaugurate the Perry scholarships, which are aimed for such students. Two colleges, Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., are also offering loans or grants to students in the same situation.

Silence protests hatred

Today student, staff and faculty on campus will symbolically join thousands of others at all educational levels across the nation in a Day of Silence to protest the discrimination, harassment and abuse -- in effect the silencing -- faced by those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered.

It began with a national championship loss. It ended with arrests, violence and tear gas -- and disappointment, anger and tension. RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Widening its offensive, Israel seized control of Bethlehem and another West Bank town Tuesday in a day of wild fighting that left at least 13 Palestinians dead. Palestinian gunmen forced their way into the Church of the Nativity, the traditional birthplace of Jesus, in Bethlehem and Israeli tanks and helicopters pounded the headquarters of a Palestinian security chief.

Bonds homers twice in opener

·

LOS ANGELES -- After getting off to a great beginning, Barry Bonds said he's more concerned about the ending. He was speaking of his team, not himself. Coming off one of the greatest offensive seasons in baseball history but still without a World Series appearance, Bonds homered twice and drove in five runs Tuesday to lead the San Francisco Giants to a season-opening 9-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Nicklaus withdraws from tournament

·

Jack Nicklaus, the most dominant player at Augusta National with six green jackets won over 23 years, withdrew Tuesday from the Masters because of lingering back problems. It will be only the second time since 1959 that Nicklaus has missed the Masters. He also skipped in 1999 when he was recovering from hip replacement surgery.

West vs. East

·

While the NBA's Western Conference leaders are battling for the top spots with grace and style, the East is a far different story. Coaches are struggling to put a healthy squad on the floor, and games are no longer contests to see who will win, but who will survive.

From a fan's perspective

·

I feel funny. Something isn't right, and I haven't been able to figure out exactly what it is. This feeling started about three weeks ago, right around the end of spring break. And no, it wasn't alcohol poisoning. It started about the time the NCAA tournament started, specifically when IU began playing. I was out in LA with my roommates enjoying the nice California sun, and Thursday night we headed out to watch all the Hoosier action at a local pub.
