ASADABAD, Afghanistan -- A shattering explosion rattled the windows Sunday at an Islamic relief organization. "It's the Americans," grumbled Bahader, a stocky, gray-haired employee.

So what's your reaction when you hear something about an environmental protest? Do you picture braying radicals chaining themselves to trees? How about masses of glory-eyed alternative youths marching for nature and hoping to get arrested so they can become the next Seattle 7? Do you imagine the kids that used to get pushed into their lockers in high school donning hemp armor and crusading for Mother Earth? Do you ever actually stop and see what it's all about or do you just get kind of annoyed and litter to spite them?
One of an NFL team's primary challenges each season is getting its rookies up to speed -- namely, a much faster game speed than they were accustomed to playing in college.
Improvement is always good. Finishing 15th at last year's Badger Invitational, the only direction the men's golf team could go was up. And that's exactly what they did. Shooting a collective 286 in the third round helped the Hoosiers secure seventh place out of 15 teams.
The Taylor/TIS Tournament was held in Bloomington this weekend bringing excitement to the over-heated University Arena leading to affectionate nicknames for the arena like "The Sweat Box," "The Inferno," or simply, the "Sauna."
Pete Sampras was right all along: He did have a 14th Grand Slam title in him. And just like the first, all those years ago, it came in a U.S. Open final against his old rival Andre Agassi.
I was as excited as anybody to see that kickoff at noon on Sunday. Having football on Sundays just makes everything seem normal again, and I'll have the pizza and beverages ready when John Madden makes his debut on "Monday Night Football."
Early season struggles have plagued the men's soccer team in recent years. After four games, the Hoosiers have sat at 2-2 each of the last three seasons. Some programs might take that record, but for a team often ranked in the preseason top 5 or 10 in the nation, a .500 start is usually disappointing.
For the field hockey team, having a bad weekend took on a whole new meaning as the Hoosiers were dominated by Ball State 3-0 Friday and dropped a close contest 1-0 to UC Berkeley Sunday. Coach Amy Robertson's squad did show marked improvement Sunday over Friday's drubbing, where IU was outshot and outplayed by the experienced Cardinals.
The official nickname for the University of Utah's athletic teams is the Runnin' Utes. The IU defense now knows why. Utah rushed for 386 yards in its 40-13 victory, giving IU their worst statistical defensive performance since they surrendered 417 rushing yards at Northwestern in 2000.
The Hoosier defense couldn't make the plays, and the offense couldn't muster much of an attack as Utah smashed the Hoosiers 40-13 in Salt Lake City on Saturday. IU accumulated 335 yards of total offense while giving up 386 yards on the ground alone.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Friday classes are so rare at some Florida universities that many students and faculty enjoy a four-day workweek.
LOS ANGELES -- "Swimfan," a creepy thriller about a teenage seductress who stalks a high school swim star, took the weekend box office by surprise, earning $12.4 million to finish in first place, according to studio estimates Sunday.
In between the crashes of thunder, guitarist Steve Sobiech tried to decide whether to play or be electrocuted Saturday night. Finally nature calmed down, and Sobiech began to play. Let me say it now, he knows how to work wonders out of his instruments. It wasn't anything flashy that caught my attention. Rather, it was Sobiech's soft touch -- his ability to gently coax the subtle tones from his guitar -- that intrigued me. It was almost like there was acoustic sound coming from his electric guitar, and that's certainly a sound I can get used to.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Declining stock values have contributed to the state's college savings program posting double-digit losses for the year in three of its key portfolios.
In anticipation of the first anniversary of Sept. 11, the John Waldron Arts center launched its newest exhibit Friday, Sept. 6, entitled "One World View." The display showcased artistic representations by Indiana residents of the attacks.
MUNCIE -- Ball State University officials are considering imposing a $1,000 fee on incoming freshmen next fall that could raise their tuition by more than 20 percent if approved.

Bloomington Police Department's public information officer, Captain Joseph Qualters said Sunday BPD had still not seen the letter that was sent to the department last Monday by the IU Student Association. NEW YORK -- Wall Street and Madison Avenue never cross -- in New York City, it's geographically impossible. On television, however, the two boulevards intersect constantly, and the result can sometimes be a rubberneck's delight.
