Residents react to ban on smoking

·

A resolution the Bloomington City Council passed Wednesday that will ban smoking in the city's bars and restaurants has sparked mixed reactions. One of the many establishments affected by the ban is Nick's English Hut, 423 E. Kirkwood Ave., a hot spot for students and alumni. Robert Schultz, a 10-year veteran night shift manager at Nick's, said the bar is one of only 35 in Bloomington which permits smoking inside. For alternatives to a smoking atmosphere, he said someone could visit one of the many other non-smoking restaurants and bars around the town.

A job to die for

·

In the Garden of Gethsemane in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Steve Snyder leans on his freshly sharpened spade as Robert and Rebecca Ayers approach him. The Ayers ask Snyder to show them the burial plots they purchased earlier that morning. As Snyder leads the Ayers to their eventual resting place, they follow him in a slow, cautious stroll, as if they are afraid of Snyder and what he will show them. "Here you go," Synder said, pointing with his spade to the ground. "These are yours." The Ayers look at the ground -- their future home -- with moderate disappointment. "This is the closest we could get to our son," said Robert Ayers, a Bloomington resident. Their son, Kendall, died last fall when he was 50. He is 20 yards away from his parents, but from where his parents stand, it seems like a mile.
