If you give 'em enough Dope...

·

In this age of nu-metal bands such as Linkin Park, it is often tough for metal bands to establish a name for themselves. This is the case for Dope, a metal band that has not yet received the credit they deserve.

The Stills show movement

·

Upon first listen, The Stills' first album demonstrates little more than an ability to follow in the steps of Interpol, while still cranking the Pop knob in the studio to MAX. Obvious parallels include Brit-heavy influence from bands like Joy Division, The Smiths and The Cure.

Undoubtedly genius lyrics, same old music

·

Barenaked Ladies have once again delivered an upbeat, intelligent album. Everything to Everyone, their seventh album, follows in the footsteps of fun lyrics mixed with a little political commentary and just a touch of sentimentality.

Anti-Flag's punk is pro-pulsive

·

Joe Strummer is smiling in heaven. While taking many pot shots for their lucrative tours, Anti-Flag's a punk rock band whose music remains rooted in the past while their politics focus on the present and their sights are set on a brighter future.

'Echoes' of post-punk and everything else

·

In the tradition of the Talking Heads, a band has come along with a sound too abrasive for the mainstream and too stunning to dismiss. You'll probably never see The Rapture hamming it up on TRL, but their debut album Echoes is one of the strongest and hardest-to-categorize records to come out this year.

Spice up Your Halloween

·

Tradition tells us that Halloween is all about tricks and treats, but digging deeper, history tells a much more elaborate story. Originally an Ancient Celtic celebration of the final harvest of the growing season, when spirits were thought to be closest to the living, townspeople would go from door to door collecting food for the gods.

School Spirit... Haunted Since 1820

·

Since its founding in 1820, IU has gained a national reputation for itself in several respects, including basketball, business and partying. But it's also deserving of another title: one of the most haunted campuses in the country.

The Shins 'chute' to thrill

·

Sometimes on a long road trip, the traveler will want to step out and take some pictures of the beautiful, unusual scenery. That pastoral appreciation is what listening to The Shins is like. On Chutes Too Narrow, the band's vision is of a crevice of Americana that's as pure as a freshly mown meadow and gently rolling stream.

IUSA looks to change election code next week

·

The IU Student Association will propose a new elections code to its congress Tuesday, which has major changes from the previous code that will benefit the students and the candidates, said IUSA Elections Coordinator Derek Molter. The new code was a result of the controversy from last year's elections. Complaints ranged from candidates sending mass campaign e-mails to campaigning in the food court. The new code clarifies some of these previously undefined guidelines.

Living with a Disability

·

Placing the square metal box in her lap, junior Erin Fountain pushes one of the blue buttons on top. Quickly, she pushes two more buttons with her pointer fingers. She glides the tips of her fingers across the surface as different Braille dots move up and down. To some, Fountain's machine might appear to be a hand-held video game. But in reality, the metal box (Braille Note) helps Fountain, a blind student at IU, take notes by voice, tell time and even calculate numbers. For students like Fountain, disabilities can present obstacles in everyday life. But IU, backed by the Bloomington community, is working to minimize these obstacles. Rather than simply raising awareness about handicap needs, they are taking action to cater to the problems.

Fee to help fund SEVIS

·

Newly proposed regulations by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have international students wondering when enough will be enough.

IU UNICEF Campus Initiative, founded by junior Grace Chung and senior Katie Forrest, functions as a student volunteer group to raise funds for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and raise awareness of the issues that children in poverty and emergency situations face.

·

Students give back to the community in a myriad of ways, either through volunteering or philanthropic donations. But for some students, this week is a special time of giving. This week, traditionally black sororities and fraternities will focus on service in all parts of the community.
