Costumes kept a secret to entire audience

One of the best-kept secrets about "Alien" is how outlandish the costumes will look. MFA costume design student Kristen Held came up with the designs based on Jonathan Yukich's descriptions in the play.

CROOKSTON, Minn. -- A convicted rapist suspected of abducting a college student 11 days ago waived extradition to North Dakota on Wednesday to face kidnapping charges, but authorities still appeared no closer to finding the victim.

Cardio Studio offers new workout option

The Student Recreational Sports Center recently opened a new Cardio Studio, funded by the Division of Recreational Sports. The room, which was made available Oct. 10, was created to give students a place to relax and feel more comfortable while working out.

Hawkins signs with Cubs for 3-year deal

CHICAGO -- Scratch that right-handed setup man off the Chicago Cubs' wish list. The Cubs confirmed Wednesday they'd agreed to terms with free agent LaTroy Hawkins. The deal, which includes a player option for 2006, guarantees the pitcher $11 million over three years. Hawkins, who turns 31 later this month, was 9-3 with a 1.86 ERA in 77 1-3 innings for the Minnesota Twins.

Bonds set to testify

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds weighed 185 pounds as a rookie in 1986 when he was a slender leadoff hitter known more for stealing bases than hitting homers. Now he's a muscle-bound 230 pounds, a six-time National League MVP who holds the season record for home runs and is gaining on Hank Aaron's career mark. Bonds says his increased strength comes from intense weight training, a proper diet and nutritional supplements from companies such as the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO.

Hoosiers hope to recapture Big Ten with senior leadership

The women's swimming and diving team heads into this weekend with some of the team traveling to the Miami Invitational in Ohio and the rest heading to Washington for the U.S. Open. Regardless of where this team heads, they have been led by a strong senior class thus far.

IU competes in U.S. Open

Starting today, the women's swimming and diving team will be competing in the U.S. Open in Washington and the Miami Invitational in Ohio. There will be five team members going to the U.S. Open, with the remainder of the team traveling to Ohio. The U.S. Open will not only be more of a international-type competition, but will feature international competitors.

Enlightenment takes a long time to occur in the Deep (Dark) South. But now they have it. When Mississippi State University hired Sylvester Croom to be their football coach Tuesday, he became the first African-American football coach in Southeastern Conference history.

IU heads west to battle No. 1 UCLA

They have won nine national soccer titles and recorded 26 trips to the College Cup combined. IU and UCLA are both programs rich in tradition, and they will compete head-to-head again as they battle in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament this weekend in Los Angeles. The respective programs have glaring similarities, as their records of success indicate.

Von Lee alcohol permit decision delayed

The future of the Von Lee Theater is still undecided after a meeting to determine whether the theater will receive an alcohol permit. The Monroe County Alcohol Beverage Board met Wednesday to address the issue concerning the former movie house, but no decision was made due to a technicality.
