A lesson from the penguins

·

New York Times had an amusing story the other day about a cute pair of penguins in the Central Park Zoo. These penguins, Roy and Silo, have been together for six years. They are affectionate, caring, utterly devoted to each other -- and the happy parents of a healthy chick named Tango. The only anomalous part of this story is the fact that Roy and Silo are both males.

AIMing for affection

·

I bet you've checked all of your friends' away messages at least twice today. Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm one of those people too. But I'm finally starting to acknowledge how sick it is that a certain slice of my life is governed by AOL's supreme accomplishment -- AOL Instant Messenger.

Lawmakers OK French religious apparel ban

·

PARIS -- France took a decisive step Tuesday toward banning Islamic head scarves in public schools, with lawmakers overwhelmingly backing the government's drive to preserve French secular traditions from Muslim fundamentalism.

Death to the crippling cap

·

Just like communism, a corvette auction or challenging Officer Friendly to a competitive game of "Guess-the-Fake," it seemed like a good idea at the time. But the Indiana General Assembly thought otherwise of Senate Bill 262, which requested a "tuition cap" for state universities.

Projects for Jill's House underway

·

Monday afternoon Indiana State Rep. Peggy Welch, D-Bloomington, introduced a resolution to the Indiana House of Representatives to solicit support from the far corners of Indiana for additional funding of Jill's House, a temporary, home-like residence for patients undergoing outpatient therapy at the IU Proton Therapy facility.

Trade suspicion for compassion

·

I recently went to a coffee shop to work on a research paper. As I was leaving around 11 p.m., an old man walked in. As we passed in the doorway, he said, "Wow, it's really cold out there." I agreed. "Could you spare some change so I could get something hot -- a cup of coffee?"

Playing "The Race Game"

·

I applaud Jack Silverstein's attempt and consideration of how to "solve" racism through the awareness of individual prejudice ("Solving Racism: Part 1," Jan. 29).

Happy Singles' Awareness Day

·

Red roses, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, tiny candy hearts with cheesy sayings on them -- thank God Valentine's Day, love and all the mushy gushy stuff that surrounds the pointless holiday will be over in 96 hours.

Love, roses and history

·

This Saturday is Valentine's Day, but do you honestly know where Valentine's Day comes from? While we've all heard the holiday has something to do with a "St. Valentine," few people realize the holiday's origin is a bit of a mystery.

Taking the plunge: Divers donate proceeds to charity

·

Recent weather updates predict Bloomington residents to feel chilling 10 degree weather, soon. The entire month of January was cold, so with the groundhog predicting an extended winter period, IU students can expect nothing less then a frigid February.

In the spirit of goodwill

·

It's warm, there's beach music playing, people are playing volleyball and a surfboard strives to buck its rider into the waves. Yet, there is a significant lack of drunken college students foolishly showing off their unmentionables.

Jefferson hits 4-minute mile at Indiana Invitational

·

Perhaps track and field's most hallowed barrier -- the four-minute mile -- is something every runner dreams of eclipsing. Each year, IU distance coach Robert Chapman sets up an elite heat of the mile, with runners included specifically to set a hot pace and a gathering of IU and neighboring distance talent. The race is consistently one of the top events of the meet.

Hoosiers unhappy with second half

·

Eight seconds were left on the clock, and Illinois had whittled IU's lead down to one. Sophomore Cyndi Valentin played damage control and drilled a jumper to put the score at 28-25 to give IU some breathing room, but Illinois junior Tiffanie Guthrie had a different idea as she heaved a 35-foot shot and drilled it to knot the game at 28.

IU wins 3, loses 1 in San Diego

·

The Hoosiers traveled to San Diego beginning with play on Saturday against No. 15 UC-Irvine, in a match that featured another come-from behind victory by IU coach Barry King's squad. UCI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half but IU matched them at three a piece right before the break. In the second half, the match seesawed back and forth until the final minute of play when freshman Kristin Zernicke netted the game winning goal off an assist from fellow freshman Janis Pardy. Saturday afternoon the Hoosiers battled No. 4 Long Beach State. IU stayed in the match throughout most of the first half and third period, and was down only two goals with one period left to play. Unfortunately, LBSU came out with more intensity in the last period of play, scoring three times while holding IU scoreless for a final of 9-4.

Home football attendance ranks low

·

Basketball to Indiana is what apple pie is to the United States. Nothing better symbolizes our state than the orange leather ball. But is Indiana so obsessed with basketball to forget about this country's most popular sport?
