Pick up a new paper

This is in response to the staff editorial published on Feb. 2, titled "Black, white and read."\nAs the main student newspaper on campus, I would expect nothing less than an unbiased approach at journalism. However, the once-thought-of professional paper is clearly developing a "non-credible" approach toward distributing information. \nYour first two arguments denouncing the distribution of such newspapers are flat out terrible. A "trial period" is exactly that -- a TRIAL PERIOD. Therefore, 3,000 newspapers available around campus would fit the definition of a trial period. \nSecond, a first-come-first-serve basis is totally fine. There are no guarantees in this world, only death and taxes. Last I checked, life's not fair, so if you show up early, you can select what newspaper you would like to read. \nYour third argument that these papers are free on the Internet goes against your very own distribution strategy. Some people enjoy reading a hard copy of a newspaper, merely trying to limit the amount of technology in one's life. If you believe Internet newspapers are so effective, then please, stop distributing your newspaper at various locations around campus and only publish your journalism on www.idsnews.com.\nI would like to thank the IU Student Association for taking the initiative to provide students with options. Instead of reading the IDS every day, I now look forward to reading the USA Today and the New York Times on a daily basis. After all, this is an educational institution, and I believe this is an enormous advantage for students attending IU. \nThe Indiana Daily Student is strictly concerned with the competition it will face with the recently added reputable newspapers, and it is ludicrous of your organization to denounce such wise actions by the IUSA. For once, the IDS might be challenged to enhance its quality of journalism and reputation. After all, COMPETITION IS GOOD. Thank you IUSA. \nWilliam P. Leckey\nSophomore
