Fifties feminism hits DVD

·

For women in the 1950's getting married, setting up house and popping out a few kids looked like the only option after college. Forget graduate school or a career; it wasn't in the cards. Despite poor editing and even worse storytelling, "Mona Lisa Smile" does provide a quick lesson in art history and a look at women's roles in the '50s.

Bondie beatdown boosts band's blastoff

·

The Von Bondies only real claim to fame -- I'm really not kidding -- is the fact that lead singer Jason Stollsteimer got his ass kicked in a bar by White Stripes frontman Jack White.

Hoosiers sweep Indiana State

·

IU was able to wrack up 18 runs in its doubleheader against Indiana State Wednesday, avenging its eight-inning loss to the Sycamores Feb. 28. The Hoosiers jumped all over ISU in the first game, winning 13-2 in five innings. They were able to fight back from a two-run deficit and score five runs in the fourth inning to win game two 5-2.

Having the ability to bounce back from adversity is critical in any sport, especially after an unsuccessful season. IU boasts one player in particular who has rebounded from having a poor season last year to being an important member in the IU men's tennis team.

Some kind of party

·

I've been to my fair share of birthday parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings and even a bachelor's party here and there, but I've never been to a Sweet 16.

IU destroys Chicago St. 29-5

·

The Hoosiers demolished the Chicago State Cougars 29-5 Wednesday to improve to 13-7 on the season. IU put together an offensive display resulting in 29 runs off of 24 hits. On a day when the wind was blowing heavily out to all sides of the field, the Hoosier hitters took advantage. They combined for six home runs on the day, the highest output this season. Senior David Hughes led the way for IU with a three-run dinger in the third and another two-run shot in the fourth to give him five RBIs on the day. Senior Kevin Mahar hit a grand slam to mark a seven-run fourth inning, as well. The Hoosiers started relatively slow offensively with five runs in the first two innings, but then exploded. Hughes and senior Seth Bynum each had a pair of home runs to help start an eight-run third inning.

Lessons from Mom

·

I went home for spring break. Needless to say, I feel fairly out of the college loop -- so much so that it didn't even bother me when people on the bus started yapping about how "totally wasted" and "plastered" they were. After a week off, I sort of missed it.

Thy poverty, not thy will

·

SHANGHAI -- Sometimes courageous moral stances are cheap. For example, I will never buy a Humvee. They're wasteful, polluting, unsafe vehicles, and therefore I am firmly morally opposed to purchasing them. It's easy for me to follow my convictions. After all, I'm hardly making enough money to even consider buying an SUV.

You down with O.P.P.?

·

Yeah, you know me! (That was fun. OK, moving on.) Many years ago, I enjoyed reading. As a child, I would often go to the library with my parents, pick out a few books and quietly read while nestled in the little fort my brother Mike and I had in the back of our old house. The fort was a small Anne Frankish spot beneath a trap door and above a rarely-used concrete stairwell which led to the cellar.

Give recruiters access

·

Military recruiters on some college campuses have felt unwanted as of late, and the U.S. House of Representatives is taking action. The ROTC Military Recruiter Equal Access to Campus Act coerces universities into providing all employers, including the Pentagon, with equal access to students. The act threatens to remove federal funding from schools that do not comply.

Bloopers, boners and bums

·

Reality shows have started a new wave of television in recent years, but how much of "Survivor" and "The Real World" is actually "reality" and how much is scripted? There is no way to know for sure, but my guess is the producers of reality shows do not start filming an episode without some sort of pre-scripting.

The soundtrack of my life

·

Jumpin' jaspers the frog went a courtin'." Although unfamiliar to most, the old children's tune "Frog Went a Courtin'" settles in tight along my funny bone as it rattles distant memories of third grade music class.
