IU sees highs and lows of Big 10 play

·

It was an up-and-down weekend for Indiana. The wrestlers upset Michigan State Saturday in convincing style, only to be crushed on the road by Illinois. The Hoosiers took the mat at University Gym against Michigan State wondering whether senior heavyweight Pat DeGain would be able to go against the No. 12 Spartans. DeGain, ranked fifth, missed last weekend's match versus Wisconsin as well as most of practice this week with an injured shoulder.

South not quite hospitable to IU

·

The South is supposed to be known for its hospitality. At No. 9 Virginia Saturday, and No. 57 North Carolina State on Sunday, the IU Men's Tennis team instead found itself amongst inhospitable surroundings, dropping both of the trip's matches and moving to 2-4 on the spring season. The losses came as a mixture of encouragement and disappointment for the team.

Whipped into shape

·

In last year's Valentine's Day edition of "Cakes' Takes," one can remember me lamenting about not having a date for National Singles' Awareness Day. Well thankfully, I've found that special someone who, for reasons unknown to any of my friends, finds me attractive. A blessing, right? Sorry baby, close your eyes -- a CURSE!

For the second straight weekend, Stephen Haas put himself atop the IU record books. FIRE FROM THE BENCH

Bracey Wright and D.J. White account for nearly 32 points per game on average. Saturday, the pair totaled nine. IU's bench overcame the lack of production from Wright and White by outscoring Minnesota's bench 27-5 en route to a 71-56 win.

Poet's performance felt more deeply to quartet's music

·

Yusef Komunyakaa's voice is like a cello when he reads, deep and melodious and blended. The Pulitzer Prize winner and former IU faculty member returned to Bloomington Saturday night to filled seats at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. To many of them, he was already a god. Joining him was the Susie Ibarra Quartet, a percussion-based jazz ensemble.

Man awaiting trial on charges of helping to hide body dies Thursday

·

CROWN POINT, Ind. -- An Indiana man who died after Chicago police used a stun gun to subdue him was awaiting trial on charges that he helped hide the body of man whose decomposed remains were found buried two years ago in a farm field. The parents of Michael Denvit said Friday the news that Ronald Alan Hasse had died in Chicago makes them wonder if they will ever find out how their son was killed.

Assembly wants control

·

The separation of power between university and state is not always a clear one. Senate Bill 369, a proposal that would allow legislators to determine state universities' financial directions, is currently up for debate. Indiana senators consider this bill every two years, and due to opposition, the bill likely will fail again.

Peace becoming possibility in Middle East

·

No one could accuse Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas or Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of not trying. At the risk of alienating themselves from their own peoples, both men have taken definitive steps toward a peace that has eluded the region for nearly 60 years.

Practice makes prepared soldiers

Scan me at the border

·

In high school, a friend of mine got a tattoo of a barcode over his left wrist. When I asked him why he tattooed himself like a piece of merchandise, he responded by saying that eventually, human beings would be just another commodity for sale by "The Man," or something like that.

Love poems (remixed)

·

Tired of stodgy, old Valentine's Day poems? To better reflect the reality of love in the 21st century, I've modernized a few classics: "22" by Emily Dickenson: I gave myself to him / And took himself for pay.

Jury of peers tough to find

·

SANTA MARIA, Calif. -- Attorneys in Michael Jackson's child-molestation trial are turning to the tough job of finding jurors who can judge the pop star not as a legend but as a defendant. Finding a jury of peers is a daunting task when the defendant lives in a storybook mansion with its own amusement park.

Corner stone

·

My papa was not "a rolling stone." For those of you who don't have the 1972 song stashed away in your iPod, the song lyrics go: Papa was a rolling stone/ wherever he laid his hat was his home/ (and when he died) /all he left us was alone. Even as a kid, I knew that having a father consistently in my life made me an exception to the social norm. The terms "child support" and "deadbeat" found their way into my lexicon long before I heard the one hit wonder of B Rock and the Bizz, "That's Just My Baby Daddy."
