Supreme Court pick grew up a Hoosier

Laporte, Ind. -- Teachers at LaLumiere School often remind their students of the successful graduates who have passed through the college prep academy's halls. Soon they might be adding a new name to that list -- U.S. Supreme Court justice nominee John G. Roberts Jr.

Budget calls for 4.2 percent increase

·

The new proposed city budget calls for restraint from the Bloomington's multiple departments. The total budget is $49.9 million dollars, an increase of 4.2 percent from last year. This is about 1.5 times the inflation rate, but the 2005 budget was almost exactly the same as the 2004 budget with no increase for inflation.

Brown and Pistons part ways, Saunders next up

·

DETROIT -- Larry Brown is free to roam again. By letting him go, the Detroit Pistons are looking for their third coach in four seasons, and Flip Saunders is the leading candidate. The Pistons seemed to decide they weren't willing to look past Brown's wandering eye, though they enjoyed a pair of great seasons with him on the sideline. Weeks of negotiations and months of speculation ended -- finally -- on Tuesday night.

IU Angles

·

There is a little more hope for success in these talks than before because of the undertakings of the South Korean government to help the North Korean government deal with its energy supply problems. The Bush administration has not devoted enough of its time and energy to these talks, which is why Roh Moo-hyun said that the U.S. "has the final key." Hopefully, this will change now that the North Koreans have decided to return to the bargaining table.

Politics vs. morals: Rove should sit this one out

·

Karl Rove and I. Lewis Libby should be excused with pay from their duties at the White House. Temporary suspension with pay is a standard safety and public relations precaution and the men and women who comprise the Bush administration are not beyond reproach.

Jordan River Forum

"They (Islamic terrorists) should be treated as were the Nazis. No tolerance, no dialogue, no mercy. That is how evil is vanquished." So says Adam Sedia in his column, "The Ugly Side of Islam." Perhaps since its publication, Sedia has had a chance to reread his column (since he apparently didn't do it beforehand) and realize his tremendous logical error -- or perhaps he is simply comfortable being a hypocrite. Every single religious sect in the entire history of humankind self-righteously convinced of their own infallibility has uttered these words against their enemies. Every single ideological movement has justified using blind violence by screeching, "We are fighting evil!" In fact, I hope that someone has informed Sedia that his words are exactly the words of the extremists he writes about so belligerently and unintelligently.

Heat is on Rove

·

When Bush denied that anyone in his administration leaked the name of a covert CIA operative to the media, it turned out not to be true. Now he has to save face, so he's enlisting the help of his friends to try to cover it up. Sounds like a soap opera to me. In fact, I think it could be a very successful soap opera. It should be called "Desperate Politicians."

Is the world so desperate?

·

I have a secret passion for the show "Desperate Housewives." Yes, it looks raunchy and silly and slutty. I thought the same thing, but I started watching and I got hooked. You may think it is a "chick show" or just a sleazy soap opera but I will vouch that it is probably one of the best television shows out there.

'Baby' DVD a knockout

·

"Million Dollar Baby" won the 2005 Oscar for Best Picture and it won the old fashion way: by actually being the best picture the year that it was released. Wow, how refreshing.
