Greek houses experience technology problems

UITS: No reports of widespread connection errors

University Information Technology Services has received various complaints regarding connectivity difficulty in fraternity and sorority \nhouses.\nBut Mark Bruhn, acting associate vice president of telecommunications for UITS, was quick to dispel any rumors of extensive breakdowns.\n"There have been no reports of widespread connectivity problems in the Greek houses," he said.\nWhile these houses are off campus, they must still connect through the IU system. This has made it difficult for residents to troubleshoot, since there are no UITS employees on hand, as is the case in residence halls.\nOne problem that seems to be the most prevalent is access to and use of the University's "Get Connected" disc. Bruhn said students need to be sure they run the CD, and have the correct program and the most recent version of it. As for the fraternities and sororities, house presidents were to receive approximately one disc for every two residents in the house.\nAnother apparent problem comes from not using the University's internet cables. The Phi Sigma Kappa house experienced connectivity problems for two weeks until they received the correct cables last week.\nThe Phi Mu house also experienced a great deal of trouble until this week because some residents had their own routers, which severed the house's connection. The problem was alleviated when the Phi Mu housing corps provided its residents with hubs.\nRegardless, the connection thus far "has been incredibly slow," said Phi Mu President Meredith Higgins. Some of the people in the house had to go to the Herman B Wells Library to use a computer.\nHiggins said she believes the problems are partly due to the fact that UITS is not accessible in Greek houses the way it is in residence halls. \n"If we had someone come by the first week and walk around the house for a few hours, we could get things fixed more easily," Higgins said.
