Hoosiers ready to shed underdog label

Maybe the underdog is in the eye of the beholder. A week after a loss to favored Iowa, the Hoosiers are still looking for their first chance at a Big Ten team upset. They might have their biggest opportunity of the year when No. 14 Ohio State comes to town Saturday, Just don't tell the Hoosiers they can't do it.

#1 This year we've got coach Hep It can't be reiterated enough: Hep helps win games. There is something different in the air. The IU campus has caught a crazy case of coach Hep, and students are loving it. The difference between this year and the previous 10 years is people believe the Hoosiers can win every game, even the one against Ohio State this weekend. What the coaches think, the players echo, and how the players play reverberates through the student body. In his press conference Tuesday, coach Hep was asked whether he was a program builder or a gameday coach. Hep replied that a coach cannot not be one without possessing the qualities of the other. Hep's already proving that he can be a program builder. Come Saturday, against the toughest opponent yet, we'll find out how good of a gameday coach he can be.

DeLay booked, released on $10,000 bail

HOUSTON -- Rep. Tom DeLay turned himself in Thursday at the sheriff's office and was fingerprinted, photographed and released on $10,000 bail on conspiracy and money laundering charges.

U.S. defense in leak case 'difficult to prove'

WASHINGTON -- The evidence prosecutors have assembled in the CIA leak case suggests Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff sought out reporters in the weeks before an undercover operative's identity was compromised in the news media, casting doubt on one of the White House's main lines of defense. For months, the White House and its supporters have argued top presidential aides did not knowingly expose Valerie Plame, the wife of administration critic Joseph Wilson, as a CIA operative.

Cancun evacuated for storm

Body found identified as man wanted in 3 shootings

GARY -- A man wanted in the shooting deaths of a suburban Cincinnati teenager and two convenience store employees in northwestern Indiana probably shot himself to death the day after the slayings, a coroner said Thursday.

U Club offers restaurant, bar mix

U Club, located at the corner of Walnut and Seventh streets, is now open for business, but customers might have to wait a while to try U Club's signature shot: the "Hoosier Optometrist."

IU asking contractors for new Service Building plans

A new project will solve IU's problem of erecting buildings on sites with already existing buildings. The IU Technical Review Committee will begin its process to build a new Service Building Friday. The new building has a $5 million budget and is expected to be operational in August 2006.

Thinking the 'unthinkable'

Even after the success of last week's constitutional referendum, it is routine to hear that Iraq's emerging democracy is "lost." The policy recommendations of those who say this might vary, but the desire to abort Iraqis precipitately is plain. This has only contributed to losing Iraq to the extremists. The defeatists are aided in this effort by a stampede of former supporters of the war who, having seen the arduous work ahead, have defected from the cause. Though they credit their conversion to "conscience," the abandonment of Iraq to fascists seems more a spectacle in abject political cowardice.

Half-witted Hoosiers

I don't like to see people cry. I tend to be an upbeat person and prefer the company of upbeat people. The other day I was walking back to my dorm behind a girl who was talking on her cell phone, clearly distraught. Now, I don't make it a habit to eavesdrop but she was very loud. "How could you forget? I reminded you over and over and you still forgot! You knew how much I was looking forward to it!"

Stevie Jay to focus on sex, religion and life

Performer Stevie Jay will perform "Life, Love, Sex, Death ... And Other Works in Progress" at 8 p.m. Friday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The show, which is free for IU students, faculty and staff, has been in development for five years.

French opera elevates Shakespeare to new level

Now take that story, have it sung in French, intensify the fight scenes and parties and add an orchestra to underline and heighten every emotion onstage. That, in a nutshell, is the opera "Roméo et Juliette," by Charles Gounod.

FOUND finds Bloomington

IU alum continues to receive honors

Intel: IU neglected wireless survey

When IU was declared an absentee from this year's "Most Unwired College Campuses" in a national survey conducted by Intel Corp., IU technology representatives claimed they would take the results with "a grain of salt." Claiming the survey methodology was partial to smaller campuses, IU and other big schools would almost always be absent from the list, said IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre in an interview.
