Several versions of phishing e-mail sent

During the last week hundreds of thousands of fraudulent phishing e-mails have been sent out targeting IU Credit Union members, said the credit union's Vice President of Management Information Systems Mark Weigle. Several versions of the e-mail have been sent out -- even to non-credit union members -- that attempts to lead the user to click on a link that sends them to a fake Web site. While the site appears to look legitimate, it is actually a "fake" site set up by someone attempting to steal personal information.

Trustee election to be decided Friday

The board of trustees' open seat will be filled shortly from one of seven candidates vying for incumbent trustee Cora Breckenridge's seat. The voting is in the hands of the 481,000 IU alumni who received their ballots in May. Votes tallied on Friday afternoon will provide quick turn around, with the new trustee term beginning the next day. Determining the winner will be difficult before votes are counted because there are no exit polls and only a small portion of ballots are typically returned. Last year less than 32,000 valid votes were cast.

Forced fondling incident reported

The IU Police Department is investigating a claim that a 37-year-old woman was fondled inappropriately by an unknown man Monday afternoon near Bryan Woods, Lt. Jerry Minger said, reading from the police report. According to the report, the victim said the man came up from behind her in the south, when he touched her inappropriately and kept on running. The victim then screamed and the man turned around before walking slowly away, the report read.

Nine African languages taught in intensive sessions

Students from around the country are spending the second half of their summer learning an African language at IU. Nine African languages -- Bambara (Bamana), Igbo, Kiswahili (Swahili), Somali, Twi (Akan), Wolof, Xhosa, Yoruba and Zulu (Isizulu) -- are being taught during the national Summer Cooperative African Language Institute, currently being held at IU through Aug. 4.

Former Delta Zeta house to be demolished

This summer, yet another old Greek house will be removed from campus. The former Delta Zeta sorority house, standing at 809 E. Seventh St., is set to be demolished before the fall semester begins. Unlike the situation surrounding the razing of the former Kappa Sigma house on Third Street, Bloomington's Historic Preservation Commission is pleased with the future for the former DZ site. During the next year, construction will begin on a new $3 million building for the Hutton Honors College.

Home in B-town

I wasn't always a fan of Bloomington. I moved here almost three years ago, but it's taken nearly as long for me to feel at ease. It wasn't that I liked my hometown better -- I'm from Carmel, Indiana -- but I guess there's always a breaking-in period, wherever you live, that makes you feel like a foreigner. It wasn't a political thing. Yes, politics is a big deal to people here -- and sometimes you find yourself in the company of people with opinions that would make El Ché say, "whoa, dude, take it easy." Other times, you find yourself the one person in the room who has an opinion about something besides beer and sluts.

Disney Dissent

What's your favorite Disney movie? Surely you have one. Finding an American unfamiliar with at least one Disney film is like finding an un-vacuumed carpet near Danny Tanner. (Is it OK that I make "Full House" references?) At any rate, many children are exposed to Disney films as a "positive" or "healthy" medium. But their content, to me -- now enlightened by feminism and more media literate than I was at eight -- only contributes to a limiting dichotomy of gender.

Pita Problem

WASHINGTON -- This city sure has some rude people. I know -- I'm not a great person to gauge this. I'm a nice Midwestern boy who believes that it's rude not to say hello to someone if you two are the only people walking down the sidewalk on a college campus. Not here -- and definitely not downtown. If you smile and say hello, people wonder what the hell is wrong with you. Who is this guy? What does he want from me? Is he a terrorist? Is he a minority?

Parking and priorities

As the Indiana Daily Student reported June 22, among other motor vehicle and campus congestion nuisances, President Herbert's Parking Commission is chitchatting about the "appropriateness" of selling A and C parking permits to students. IU Student Body Vice President Andrew Lauck has said that our elected-student body representatives will "disagree with any initiative that would take away permit access to students who need them for their contributions to the University."

Goodbye ESPN-Plus, Hello DVR

June 21, 2006 marked the end of an era. The Big Ten Conference last week reached an agreement with its three main media outlets (ABC/CBS/ESPN) to extend its television contract for football and men's and women's basketball. But, what the conference also agreed upon effectively ends a Big Ten mainstay -- the Phillips 66 Studio Show on ESPN-Plus during halftime and between games featuring Mike Gleason. However, the contract signed last week marked a new era with the creation of the conference's new television channel (and hopefully more commercials featuring Talib Kweli promoting the Big Ten).
