Skinny jeans and GDP

·

CAIRO, Egypt – Bottled water. Embassy registrations. Hepatitis vaccines. Skinny jeans? Packing for Egypt involved a week of angst-ridden foraging through my closet in search of anything that would be appropriate in a new social framework where my knee-length Old Navy cotton skirt is considered risqué.

Police officer battered

·

A Bloomington man was arrested Monday night for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Peoples Park. Peter Torgersen, 38, faces preliminary charges of battery on a police officer, public intoxication and resisting law enforcement. Bloomington Police Department Officer Shane Rasche was on patrol Monday night when he spotted Torgersen drinking a bottle of beer, BPD Sgt. Jeff Canada said, reading from a police report. Rasche got out of his car and approached Torgersen. While Rasche was talking on his radio, Torgersen pushed him against his car and ran off behind Nick’s English Hut, Canada said, reading from the police report. Torgersen was taken into custody and transported to the Monroe County Jail.

Milan Fashion Week begins with Armani

·

MILAN, Italy – Showing Giorgio Armani on the first day of the Milan fashion week is like serving dessert before the main course. After such a treat, is there room for more?

Le Dernier Cri

·

A fashion trend that I will never understand is the public’s fascination with Crocs. The idea of foam resin clogs that look like a clown shoes has never been appealing to me. I don’t care how comfortable they are supposed to be, I cannot accept them as a legitimate form of footwear.

Loving the bomb

·

In spy movies, it always seems that some global supervillain is holding the world hostage by threatening major cities with stolen nuclear warheads. This always seemed dumb to me, though. Based on my movie-originated nuclear weaponry expertise, warheads are pretty well-protected. You need to turn at least two different keys in order to launch a nuclear attack, after all.

The fine print

·

It seems like everybody’s getting in trouble these days – not for their actions, but for their words. Have you noticed how many people out there are just sitting around waiting to be offended by the things that other people say? Just about every other day some politician, religious leader or media personality makes an apology for something he said that caught a bunch of flak. I’ve never understood why someone would go to the trouble to say something provocative and then turn around and apologize when people are provoked! If it needs to be apologized for, don’t say it in the first place; if it doesn’t need to be apologized for, stand your ground. In this column, I plan on saying what I mean and meaning what I say. If I get something wrong I’ll correct myself, but I’m not going to apologize for taking unpopular positions.

Boycotting boycotts

·

On Sunday, I watched an interview with a lawyer from the American Civil Liberties Union about how he defends the rights of groups he disagrees with, such as the Ku Klux Klan. He has no regrets about defending these groups’ rights to free speech because he staunchly believes in everyone’s right to constitutional liberties, whether or not he agrees with them.

Home schooling

I am 9 years old and this is my mom; her name is Betty, and this is my other mom; her name is Kim.” This statement, uttered by a girl featured in a New Jersey public school system diversity education video, while it seems harmless enough, has been part of a major controversy. New Jersey law mandates teaching fourth grade students a diversity education curriculum, which includes the half-hour video, “That’s a Family!”
