As summer quickly comes to a close, students, families and townies start preparing for the next school year. Final vacations are planned, the sweet days to sleep in count down and the month of July slowly draws to a close. However, before giving up on these beautiful July days, the residents of Monroe County rally together for the grand finale of the summer: the Monroe County Fair.

Kirkwood Avenue has had its fair share of fleeting businesses. With a high unemployment rate, it has become increasingly difficult to get approval for a loan and to succeed in the local business industry.

Meth dealer arrested twice in 1 month

A Bloomington auto detailer was arrested Monday night for manufacturing methamphetamines. He had also been arrested two weeks prior for the same offense and was out on bond.

World Cup popularity brings more players to Woodlawn

Around 7 p.m. nearly every day of the week, groups of 15 to 40 people congregate at the field on the corner of 10th Street and Woodlawn Avenue to engage in the other kind of football, sometimes playing for as long as three hours.

Current Los Angeles Clippers and former Hoosier guard Eric Gordon recently made the first roster cut for Team USA. The 2007 Indiana Mr. Basketball played in 62 games and averaged 16.9 points per game. He also shot .449 percent from the floor and .371 from downtown during his second professional season.

Returning home to Haiti

Nick Andre knew he needed to stay in Haiti. His wife and five children were there. And even though he had a job teaching Haitian Creole at IU and was pursuing a master’s degree in French Linguistics, something told him he needed to be home.

McMurray wins 2010 Brickyard 400

With McMurray, who races for Chip Ganassi Racing, taking the checkered flag today, Chip Ganassi has become the first owner to win the Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500, and the Brickyard 400 in the same year. McMurray also won the Daytona 500, and Dario Franchitti brought Ganassi the other Indianapolis win.

FIRE grants IU speech policies ‘yellow light’

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, an organization that aims to defend students’ rights on college campuses, has identified IU-Bloomington as a “yellow light” university, meaning FIRE has found several policies to be too vague and allow for too much discretion on the part of university administrators.



Festival celebrates Eurasian culture, music

The 18th-annual Silk Road Bayram in the Willkie Auditorium celebrated the different countries along the ancient trade route, which wound its way from China to modern-day Italy. The event featured both a cultural gallery and musical performances from those familiar with the region.

Collisions on Lake Monroe not rare

Lake Monroe is not safe from watercraft accidents. On June 28, 51-year-old Susan Collier and her grandson, 8-year-old Gage Pruett, died following a boat collision. These were just two of the three fatalities that have taken place on the lake in 2010.
