The Indiana State Police, Indiana University Police Department and Residential Programs and Services provided safety tips for surviving life on a college campus. If you’re a freshman, take heed.
-Be patient and careful; expect restricted roads.
-Keep your dorm room door locked.
-Never walk or jog alone at night. Should you find yourself walking alone at night, avoid secluded or dimly lit areas. Stay away from wooded areas or locations where shrubs or buildings might provide cover for assailants.
-Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave.
-Don’t become a victim of identity theft. Don’t give out personal information about yourself.
-Call 911 if you observe an impaired driver. Be ready to give a description of the vehicle and the direction it is heading.
-IUPD personnel will be stationed at intersections and dorms around campus from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., IUPD Lt. Craig Munroe said.
-Indiana State Police will set up a sobriety checkpoint in Monroe County this Friday. The time and location of the checkpoint will not be released, but motorists who are not impaired can expect only short delays.
-Last year from Aug. 26 to 29, Indiana State Excise Police issued 84 citations, confiscated 20 false IDs and arrested 45 people.
