Student talents revealed at Union Board film fest

The Union Board showcased student talent last weekend when it held the second-annual Student Film Festival in Indiana Memorial Union's Whittenberger Auditorium. The 11 submissions, created by IU students, ranged in genre from silent film to horror. After the movies were screened each night, audience members voted for their favorites for the Audience Choice Awards which were given Saturday night. Some of the filmmakers faced last minute challenges in the creation of their movies for the film festival.

Troupe lights up stage with stories, lively characters

Amelia Bedelia and other literary pals invaded the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Saturday afternoon, with the help of Story Salad productions. Story Salad is a four-person, national children's touring company that presents approximately one-hour musical shows based on children's books and stories.

Variety of genres featured in weekend shows

IU faculty and students presented "An Evening of Contemporary Dance" Thursday and Friday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The performance featured a diverse range of dance styles, all choreographed by IU faculty from the schools of Kinesiology and Music and the department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and performed by IU students.

Historic opera debuts

Most operas have plots that seem larger than life -- more comedic or more tragic than reality could ever be. With the IU Opera Theater's newest production, the drama may be larger than life, but it is grounded in a true story. "The Ballad of Baby Doe" by American composer Douglas Moore premiered in 1956 in Central City, Colo., near where the story actually took place.

Transforming the wedding dress

Two weeks ago, I had my first experience with making a wedding dress. Normally, I shy away from events like weddings and birthdays because I don't like them. Plus, whenever I look at a wedding dress, I cringe at the satin tulle madness some poor designer had to work with. Wedding dresses usually aren't my style.

Story Salad brings Amelia Bedelia to Buskirk-Chumley

Children's storybook character Amelia Bedelia will make an appearance at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater 2 p.m. Saturday. As a part of the BCT Family Series, Story Salad Productions will present "Amelia Bedelia 4 Mayor," a live-action musical-theater show designed for children and their families.

A concert, titled Swingin' With The Big Bands, will feature the music of Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, Terry Gibbs, Barry Manilow, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and more. Featured performers will be vocalists Robert Stright and Sarah Flint. The Stardusters Jazz Orchestra is Central Indiana's premier big band recreating the original sounds of the bands of the "Big Band Era".

Union Board shows student film festival

From photo montage to live action to computer animation, IU students submitted a variety of films to the Union Board's second annual Student Film Festival. The Union Board will be screening the films 8 p.m. today and Friday in the Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union.

Panel to discuss Pulitzer-winning play

An amazing discovery is made in the mathematical field. An answer to a seemingly impossible proof has been found by a woman. Upon further scrutiny, it appears she may have completed the work herself. However, women are not able to complete complex mathematical problems, at least according to male mathematicians in the play "Proof".

Best spot for the show

Seventh Street is packed with cars as people file into the IU Auditorium. Women's shiny heels click on the pavement while the men's best slacks barely drag in melted ice puddles. They have all come to enjoy the same show; however, once inside, they scatter like oil beads on a hotplate. Some head straight to the orchestra seats, while others trudge upstairs to the balcony to view the show from a further distance.

Singer Luther Vandross won't attend Grammys

NEW YORK -- An ailing Luther Vandross will not be able to attend Sunday's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where he's nominated for five awards, including song of the year for "Dance With My Father." Luther is most famous for his songs " Here and Now," and Dionne Warwick's "A House is Not a Home."

Sex, booze and Ito

My first thought after finishing "Crawling at Night," a novel penned by Nani Power, is one of confusion. This book literally drips of sex and booze, but remains resolutely devoid of passion and life. No character in the book calls for sympathy from the reader ... everyone is a member of society living on the fringes. A novel exploring the loneliness that envelops the lives of its characters, "Crawling at Night" passes on the opportunity to draw any form of a conclusion and ends in an unsatisfying, tangled knot.

Interior design students create art

Inspiration can come from almost anywhere. Students in the interior design program learned their personalities greatly affected their designs when recently completing projects for a statewide competition. The contest was put on by the International Interior Design Association. Seniors participating in the interior design project created 26 chairs as part of a class required for their major. It is mandatory for seniors in Cynthia Landis' senior studio H476 Interior Design VI to enter the annual competition.

Audiences pack theater for film fest

Folk music played softly in the background as the audience stared at a blank screen awaiting the beginning of the show. "PRIDE: In Several Short Cinematic Acts," took the screen at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Saturday afternoon and evening with 600 people in attendance. PRIDE is an organization which works to improve awareness and create a community for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons and those who support them.

Southwestern snacks for the Grammys

Dance company explores art through dance workshops

The African American Dance Company offered students a chance to explore a wide array of dance techniques and styles at its seventh annual workshop Jan. 30 and 31 at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. Students were able to learn instruction in Horton and Dunham modern technique, jazz, Afro Cuban, Salsa and African dance.
