'Happy Days' takes the stage in Bloomington

A martini -- it is the millionaire's beer. The potent drink is crystal clear in color, often with a plump green olive lying at the bottom of the wide-brim stemmed glass. Christine Baranski's wealthy character Maryann Thorpe from the 1995 sitcom "Cybill" was never seen without one. Megan Mullally's character of Karen Walker on "Will and Grace" slurps them down like water.

'Your Art Here' sponsors fundraiser The 'Your Art Here' project will sponsor a benefit show and art auction for the National Youth Art Month project of 2004: Billboard Generation II. The benefit show and art auction will be held at 9 p.m. Saturday at Second Story, located at 201 S. College Ave. Musical performers will include TV Mike, Cheer Up Charlie, Secret Girl, The Coke Dares and more.

Jazz treasure to visit IU

Herbie Hancock, one of the greatest composers in jazz history, brings an acoustic band tonight to the IU Auditorium for his first-ever concert in Bloomington. Hancock, a pianist, has recorded some of the most memorable songs in jazz history, including "Canteloupe Island," "Watermelon Man" and "Chameleon."

Hilfiger dresses Indy in new clothing collection

Tommy Hilfiger, a designer known for his stylish casual wear, is growing up and bringing his clothing with him. Hilfiger greeted fans Friday at the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis to introduce his new upscale clothing line, H Hilfiger. The new collection came out of a need for a luxurious line that catered to adults and to boost declining sales in his mens' line, Hilfiger said.

College fashion hits runway

A fashion show that incorporates almost all areas of apparel might seem difficult to achieve, but it's certainly not impossible, as the Apparel Merchandising Organization proved this past Thursday night. The annual AMO fashion show combined trendy street wear, sports and casual attire, formal evening looks and ballet costumes as a part of its student-organized show. The looks on the runway represented all aspects of collegiate fashion, along with unique designs constructed by students majoring in fashion design and costume construction technology. A raffle that consisted of more than $13,000 worth of prizes set the night off to a good start. A new North Face jacket, hats, sandals and leather bags for spring were some of the items won by audience members. Ticket holders who didn't get called had the opportunity to claim extra prizes after the raffle.

Kafka finds new life in comedy

The newest comedy troupe to hit Bloomington is, by their own definition, an oddity. ODDITYS is a band of IU student comedians who have recently come together at the Bloomington Playwrights Project to bring IU students and Bloomington residents their unique brand of humor. ODDITYS' second performance will be at 11:30 p.m. today at the BPP's Black Box Theatre. "The group's humor runs the gamut from dry, witty word play to cruel and obscene low-brow," IU senior and ODDITYS writer and cast member Ambur Lowenthal said. "ODDITYS is nothing if not versatile."

Romantic, moody Irish singer catching on

NEW YORK -- Even with an audience including Julia Roberts, Renee Zellweger, George Clooney and Nicolas Cage, singer-songwriter Damien Rice is not a background kind of guy. All those stars attended a gig Rice had last year at the home of a Hollywood agent to introduce his music to the movie community. But it was a party with networking and laughing, so when the folksy Irishman began strumming his guitar, few people noticed.

Singing Hoosiers blend pop, classical, Broadway styles

He lifted his hands and the giggles and scattered conversations immediately transformed into song. Director Michael Schwartzkopf and the Singing Hoosiers struggled Tuesday afternoon at rehearsal to turn their expansive repertoire into a full-fledged musical production.

Middle Way House presents art

Sexual Assault Awareness Month started Thursday, and the Middle Way House is taking advantage by sponsoring a month-long show of community art at the Indiana Memorial Union Gallery throughout April. Middle Way House provides a safe place for women and children who have been victims of domestic and sexual abuse and assault. The presenting of artwork based on sexual assault is a way for Middle Way House to reach out to the community of Bloomington about this "silent epidemic."

Students choreograph, produce dance shows for final projects

This weekend, the work of six IU seniors in the Individualized Major Program will come to fruition. At 8 p.m. tonight in the John Waldron Arts Center, these seniors -- who have chosen to major in Dance Performance through the IMP -- will perform and present their final projects in a series called "Revival: The Rebirth of Dance". Erin Pritchard and Brittany Snyder are two of the seniors who chose to major in dance performance and will be presenting their final project in the show. Pritchard and Snyder have been working on their final project for the past two months. The hard work and time put into the presentation have made the two realize choosing to do the IMP major has not been an easy walk in the park, they said.

Play offers insight into 1600s witchcraft

Tonight, the Reva Shiner Winner, "MALEFICIA: A Wonderful Discoverie of Witches," premiers at the Bloomington Playwrights Project, located at 312 S. Washington St. "MALIFICIA" brings four women who were accused of witchcraft in Lancaster County, England, in 1612, back to life. "MALEFICIA's" director, Steve Decker, said the play gives a voice to these women who may have never been heard from again.

Students show off passion for fashion

The Apparel Merchandising Organization is one of the largest groups on campus, consisting of over 300 members engaging in fun and educational activities relating to fashion. One of the long-awaited AMO events is the annual fashion show which will take place tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. The AMO Fashion Show is put on by apparel merchandising and interior design majors, and will feature a combination of looks from local retailers and IU Costume Construction Technology students. Local retailers include Urban Outfitters, Cha Cha, JR Stallsmith and JR Waters.

Weekend getaway

The fickle weather is really beginning to bother me. I have been waiting to write this column for some time now, but I can wait no longer. I thought I'd write a column about shopping when the weather is nice, but spring break brought snow and it still keeps raining. So, in an impatient tantrum I looked at the forecast for this weekend, and I am happy to report it will be partly cloudy with a 95 percent chance of shopping. The weather will finally permit for spring shopping to commence. What a blessing.

Success of gradutes inspires ballet students

Regarded as one of the top schools in the nation for ballet, IU regularly competes with other outstanding schools, such as Julliard, for the nation's top ballet students and programs. Like Julliard, the IU Ballet Theater has sent its graduates to some of the best professional theater companies in the country -- alumnae Dori Goldstein, Sarah Smith, and Sarah Roth are now with the Washington, American and Boston ballet theaters, respectively.

The words hardworking, determined and talented could describe a 300-pound fullback, but they also ring true for a 110-pound ballerina. Ballerinas live in a world where they are constantly challenging their bodies and striving for perfection to get that one chance at making it to the big time. Senior ballet majors' second semester is dedicated to practicing for the Spring Ballet, much like the culmination of a sports championship game.
