Famed Chicago painter dies at 65

CHICAGO -- Painter Ed Paschke, one of Chicago's best-known artists of the past half century, has died at age 65. Paschke died in his sleep on Thanksgiving at the home he shared with his daughter, Sharon, who said heart problems ran in the family and that physicians had noted a murmur in her father's heart.

Textiles classes emphasize artistic creations

An array of colorful yarns rest on the loom. Long bundles of white fibers sit on the table top waiting to be dyed. Woven baskets made of yarns and beads, a woven dress and patterned fabrics are all on display in the hall. The large classroom on the second floor of the Fine Arts building is home to students pursuing the mixed media of textiles at IU.

Indian Culture displayed during Diwali, Festival of Lights

Friday marked the celebration of Diwali, or the Indian festival of lights, by the Indian Student Association. Diwali is a Hindu celebration of the New Year with unique customs and varied significance. Firecrackers, an array of colors and bright lights are a typical way to ring in the New Year.

French-inspired Lilly Library exhibit explores illustrated books of poetry

A blue, wooden, square-shaped box with shards of glass fastened to its front sits in a display case at IU's Lilly Library. A wire frame covers the pieces of glass. The box exists as a cover of a book on display in the library in an exhibit titled "The Powerful Lesson of the Eye," which explores illustrated books.

Local artwork up for sale The Bloomington Area Arts Council opens its annual holiday art sale this weekend in the Rosemary P. Miller Gallery and Gallery Shop of the John Waldron Arts Center. Handcrafted gifts created by over 50 local and regional artists will be available for purchase. Items for sale include pieces of pottery, glasswork, and metalwork, as well as ornaments, jewelry, paintings, quilting and photography.

Film industry files first wave of anti-piracy lawsuits

LOS ANGELES -- Following the lead of record companies who curtailed rampant Internet piracy by targeting even small-time file swappers, Hollywood studios have launched a first wave of lawsuits against people who allegedly downloaded recent films such as "Spider-Man 2" and "Troy."

'Superstar' comes to IU Auditorium Through the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the lyrics of Tim Rice, the story of Jesus' last seven days will be told rock-opera style in "Jesus Christ Superstar" at 8 p.m. tonight and Wednesday at the IU Auditorium.

Bill Condon is sorry. The Academy Award-winning director and writer of the new movie "Kinsey," a biopic about IU professor and human sexuality research pioneer Dr. Alfred C. Kinsey, is sorry because when it came time to give acknowledgements in the film's credits, it read that the filmmakers would like to thank the "University of Indiana."

New book displays local art

The Bloomington Chamber of Commerce unveiled its 2004 "Bloomington Sketchbook" Friday night at Gallery North on the Square. "Bloomington Sketchbook" is an art book dedicated to the works of local artists. Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Programs Sara McGoun said the book took two years to organize.
