Classic All-American muscle cars make thundering comeback at Detroit auto

DETROIT -- Automakers will be flexing some muscle at this year's North American International Auto Show, with a slew of performance cars that harken back to the V-8-charged glory days of the 1960s and early '70s.

Utah theater balks at 'Brokeback Mountain'

SALT LAKE CITY -- A movie theater owned by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller abruptly changed its screening plans and decided not to show the film "Brokeback Mountain." The film, an R-rated Western gay romance story, was supposed to open Friday at the Megaplex at Jordan Commons in Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Instead it was pulled from the schedule.

Auditions this week for student performers

Fortunately, less than 10 minutes from the Sample Gates, the emerging or even the experienced artist may be able to find a friendly and casual venue for creative catharsis in Bloomington's John Waldron Arts Center. Classes in acting and dance begin in early January and are open to the public.

Jon Stewart slated to host 2006 Academy Awards

Local artist brings craft of clay to kids

Karen Green Stone didn't always plan to be a potter. In fact, she had no history with clay until she substituted for an art teacher in 1975. Now she teaches "The Science of Art" at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St., and creates her functional pottery. "What it is is looking at the materials we use as artists and where they come from," Green Stone said about her class. "It's a way to introduce children to the natural world."

Museum showcases rare money

WASHINGTON -- As long as there's been money, there have been counterfeiters. An exhibit at the National Museum of American History reinforces that axiom. The oldest piece in the display is a 1690 two-shilling bill from Massachusetts. A counterfeiter good with a pen changed its value to 20 shillings.

'Art Mart' sells handcrafted work for holiday season at Waldron Center

For people interested in giving unique gifts to their friends and family this holiday season, the annual "Art Mart" sale at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St., is the place to look. The sale, which features items by local artists, runs through Dec. 23 and is located in the Flashlight Gallery. There will also be a sale called the "Cash and Carry," located a floor above the "Art Mart," which features wall art for $40 or less.

Ladies First takes over Buskirk

Every year, "Ladies First", IU's female a cappella group, puts on a winter show at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The ladies are now making their final preparations for their concert, and couldn't be more excited about the show. Member Liz Buchanan, a junior, said this year's show has some changes.

Art Sinsabaugh's work on display at Art Museum

The IU Art Museum special exhibitions gallery is currently playing host to "American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh" until Dec. 23. This distinctive collection highlights Art Sinsabaugh's incredible landscape photographs, which were captured by the artist's giant "banquet" camera, so named because it was originally intended to photograph large social gatherings. With this colossal piece of equipment, Sinsabaugh was able to produce 12-by-20-inch negatives, which he often dramatically cropped to evoke the massive sweep of the horizon.

Irish Lion hosts classic Christmas play

Brought to life at the Irish Lion is a classic tale of hope, repentance and maybe a "bah, humbug!" or two. Running at 8 p.m. Dec. 6, 12 and 13, the Monroe County Civic Theater presents, in the spirit of the yuletide season, "A Christmas Carol."

Christmas cookies help missionaries, women's groups

'Csárdas' preserves folk tradition

On Friday evening, the Hungarian dance ensemble "Csárdas" displayed a passionate folk tradition and East European tango. Part of the Lotus Education and the Arts Foundation's mission to bring world music and culture to Bloomington, "Csárdas: The Tango of the East" also served as a celebration of Hungarian artistry and athleticism.

The Department of Theatre and Drama has tackled everything from murder to gay parenthood this fall, and now it will close the semester with the intimate play "Wit," a Pulitzer Prize-winner by Margaret Edson opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Wells-Metz Theatre.
