Ballet season opens with 'Les Sylphides'

"Les Sylphides" will open IU Ballet Theatre's fall program at 8 p.m. Friday in the Musical Arts Center. It is a Mikhail Fokine ballet, choreographed in 1908, set to the music of Fredric Chopin. "Les Sylphides" is a monumental piece of dance that has withstood the test of time and continues to be performed by ballet companies across the globe.

City Lights to show early silent films

Ballantine Hall 013 will be transported to the dawn of cinema at 8 p.m. Sunday. Seven short films by silent celluloid director Georges Melies will be screened along with live musical accompaniment from Phillip Johnston's Transparent Quartet. A talk by Communication and Culture professor Joan Hawkins will precede the event. The evening is free and open to the public. There is also free parking in the Ballantine Hall garage when a handbill or City Lights schedule is left on the vehicle's dashboard.

The year 2000 so far has truly been a disappointing one for movies. Of course, the triumph of television's "Survivor" in the midst of the summer season doesn't help. Now the television's reality craze has finally come to an end and the Oscar race has officially begun, there are a number of fall films that look just promising enough to renew the faith of moviegoers. Although it's unlikely most of these films will be played in Bloomington thanks to the generally tasteless and always greedy Kerasotes Theatres, these films still give us something to look forward to on the shelves of Classical Film & Music.

Ballet season to get under way

After six weeks of rehearsals, the IU Ballet Theatre is ready to kick off its fall program. The dancers in the ballet department have been meticulously practicing their routines -- working steadily from 1:30-5:45 p.m Monday through Friday. It's all in preparation four its showcase of four pieces at 8 p.m Oct. 6 and 7 in the Musical Arts Center.

City recommends management change at Buskirk-Chumley

Mayor John Fernandez announced Monday the initial findings and recommendations of the Bloomington Area Arts Council independent study commission. Fernandez appointed the commission last month to investigate the financial difficulties of the BAAC, which is nearly $1 million in debt after the $3.2 million renovation of the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre last year. It consists of city council members and others with backgrounds in the arts and business.

City Lights shines with diverse films

"King Kong," "The Bride of Frankenstein," "Safety Last" and "Playtime" will be presented at this season's City Lights festival. "City Lights is a free film series open to the public and University community. It shows 16 mm prints of cinema that rarely find their way to the big screen," said graduate student Drew Todd, co-founder of City Lights.

Hungarian pianist to perform recital

Peter Pertis, a former soloist with the Hungarian philharmonic, will give a guest recital at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Recital Hall. A graduate of the Bela Batok Conservatory of Music, Pertis has toured Eastern and Western Europe, South America, the Middle East and Asia. Now giving master's degree classes, he has served as artist in residence at the Musashino Music Academy in Tokyo and the University of Hartford.

IU alumnus Kyle Quass will perform from 7-9 p.m. today at TIS Music Shop, 1424 E. Third St., as part of the store's Tuesday Night Jazz Series. The show, as with all Tuesday performances, is free.
