Hoosiers play poorly, still win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The men's soccer team needed a penalty kick in the game's 20th minute Sunday to beat Ohio State in its final regular season Big Ten game. The penalty kick, scored by senior forward Matt Fundenberger after junior midfielder Tyler Hawley was taken down in the penalty area, was all the scoring that took place at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, as IU won 1-0.

It's about time

The football team's best week of practice this season resulted in IU picking up its biggest win in the coach Cam Cameron era. After getting embarrassed 58-0 last Saturday at Michigan, IU (3-4, 2-2 in Big Ten play) recovered Saturday to defeat No. 22 Minnesota 51-43 before a Homecoming crowd of 30,882 at Memorial Stadium. The win marked Cameron's first victory against a ranked opponent. IU's last win against a ranked team was a 10-0 victory against Michigan State in 1993.

Conference season finishes at Purdue

Women's soccer coach Joe Kelley is starting to do the things he said he hoped to do with his lineup. The wealth of talent he possessed at the beginning of the season disappeared during the bulk of conference play as injuries kept Kelley's plans purely on paper.

Freshman fights injury to play big role for the Hoosiers

In baseball, there is always a player that is considered the "utility" player. He's a player that could play any position on the field the coach feels necessary. For the women's soccer team, the utility player is freshman Kim Sturm. Last year Sturm had to fight through an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury that had benched her during her senior year of high school and her freshman year at IU. Despite the injury, she has returned this season to play an extensive amount of roles on the field.

Diver of the Year and three-meter national champion last season. Jeff Huber coached Reiling and the women's team to a national championship last season, and he did the same with the men. Huber was named Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season for his accomplishments.

Subway Series a disappointment

I guess it was inevitable. As eight teams entered the playoffs, everybody knew the two that would eventually be in the World Series. Sure, the San Francisco Giants had the best record in baseball. Sure, the Braves' pitching staff makes them the annual National League favorite. The White Sox were supposed to sneak in, and the Yankees lost seven in a row the week before the playoffs. But did anybody really think that it would end up differently?

Golden opportunity

Freshman fills key role

Tennis coach wins players' admiration

Hockey team opens season on road

The hockey team kicks off its season this weekend with a three-game road trip. The Hoosiers face Eastern Michigan University tonight, then travel to the University of Toledo for a two-night series against the Rockets Friday and Saturday.
