Redhawks not to be overlooked

The Hoosiers (21-14, 5-7 Big Ten) will take a rare break from conference play today to play host to the University of Miami-Ohio. Though IU is playing a non-conference foe, this doesn't mean the game will be easy. The Redhawks are 22-11 this season and were 36-24 last season as one the best teams in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Last year, the Hoosiers traveled to Miami to play a game during conference play and lost 8-5. This year, IU hopes it will be different but team members are aware of the quality team they are facing in the Redhawks.

Recruit declares for draft

Former IU basketball recruit Josh Smith announced Tuesday he would skip college and enter the 2004 NBA draft. "After discussions with my family and coaches, I believe that entering the NBA draft is the best decision for me and my family," Smith said in a statement to The Associated Press. He is predicted to be a top-10 draft pick, according to the AP.

Hoosiers run at 3 different locations

The coming weekend will find the IU track team dividing its athletes between three different meets. Several will head east to compete at perhaps the NCAA's most-famous competition -- the Penn Relays -- held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Another set will go west to the equally-esteemed Drake Relays -- held at Iowa's Drake University. All other healthy athletes, except those who competed last weekend at Mt. SAC, Calif., will compete at Purdue.

Battle-tested Hoosiers ready for Louisville

When IU looks back on this season, it won't be disappointed about the strength of its schedule. Facing off against softball powerhouses Michigan, Nebraska, and Iowa earlier in the season should help prepare the Hoosiers (25-25, 2-8) for their upcoming game against the Louisville Cardinals (35-10).

Hoosiers split team at Iowa, Pennsylvania

The IU women's track and field team sends its sprinters, jumpers, and distance runners to Philadelphia today for the prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. The team sends its pole vaulters to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Focused Sigma Nu a surprise in 2nd

Record-breaking year for Kovac, sights set for race win

In the last Little 500 series event, senior Bri Kovac took the track with a goal. As if her record-setting Individual Time Trial wasn't enough, Bri led her Teter team around the track in Team Pursuit at blazing speeds. So fast, their final run resulted in a record-setting time. The team surpassed themselves in the record books after already setting the fastest time ever in its preliminary run.

Kenyans sweep annual race

Bogado brings perspective

With her hair braided back and sunglasses hiding her intimidating stare, you can almost see the batters tremble when they step to the plate against sophomore pitcher Mariangee Bogado. "When Mariangee came to IU, we didn't know much about her," senior Val White said. "We had only heard about how she pitched and were excited to have her on the team."

Coach adjusts to new role on tennis team

There are many important parts to any team, from players to trainers and specifically, coaches. This was evident last year when newly-hired assistant coach Matt Pledger had to fill the shoes of IU coach Ken Hydinger, who was on administrative leave last season for medical reasons.

Vlahogeorge gets early start

While most students his age are thinking about senior pranks and which tux to wear to the prom, IU freshman quarterback Mike Vlahogeorge has his mind set on another topic -- football. Vlahogeorge is in a unique position because he opted to graduate high school early and enroll at IU in order to play with the spring football squad. Vlahogeorge comes into the IU program with serious credentials as the six-foot-three, 220-pound playcaller ranks No. 4 all-time in the Indiana state high school list with 10,757 career passing yards. Vlahogeorge acquired such numbers after a stellar senior season, passing for 3,347 yards and 44 touchdowns while averaging well over 300 yards per game.

Remembering a coaching legend

Friends, family and swimmers alike gathered Sunday to celebrate and commemorate the life of former IU swimming coach James "Doc" Counsilman, who passed away Jan. 4 at the age of 83. The Whittenberger Auditorium was filled to the brim with anyone and everyone whose life was touched by Counsilman, including more than 20 Olympic swimmers. Counsilman coached swimming at IU for more than 30 years and led the team to 23 conference titles, including 20 consecutive conference championships from 1961 to 1980. He also coached two of the most successful U.S. Olympic teams in history in the 1964 and 1976 squads. The 1976 team won 12 of 13 possible gold medals, and Counsilman led swimmers to set world records in every single event. But his greatest contribution came in the form of a book titled "The Science of Swimming," master of ceremonies and former coach Cecil Colwin said.

Hoosiers win pair, lose thriller in sudden death

The No. 10 Hoosier women's water polo squad kicked off the post-season in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday afternoon looking to defend its CWPA Eastern Conference title. After knocking off Grove City and Gannon in impressive fashion, the Cream and Crimson fell to the No. 8 Wolverines of Michigan in a heartbreaker.

Chesnut sets records Four for four. IU senior Lauren Chesnut set a NCAA regional qualifying mark for the IU women's track and field team in the triple jump in all four meets of the outdoor track season. Chesnut's jump of 12.44 meters at the Nebraska Quadrangular was good for second place and is her second best jump in the outdoor season with four weeks to go until the Big Ten Championship.

Hoosiers come up empty

The IU rowing team got a pretty good taste for what the Big Ten championships might be like when it finished up its home regattas for the season this past Saturday. The Hoosiers played host to some strong Big Ten crews, including Iowa, Minnesota, No. 1 Ohio State and No. 13 Wisconsin at Lake Lemon, where sunny skies, warm weather and only a slight breeze highlighted the day's racing conditions.

Team gets shutout by Minnesota, defeats Iowa

On a weekend where the sun was out and temperatures reached into the 80's, the No. 56 Hoosiers (11-9, 5-3) started cold but heated up to salvage the weekend split and finish tied with Northwestern for third in the Big Ten. IU lost to Minnesota 7-0 but turned around and beat the Iowa Hawkeyes, 7-0.

Ford wins first career tournament; team finishes 2nd

The IU women's golf team traveled to the Lady Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette Saturday and Sunday to play against a majority of its conference opponents, whom it will face again this weekend at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Sunday's final round was anything but easy for senior Danah Ford, who entered the day in the lead by nine shots.

MLBPA leader to give lecture

Today, IU welcomes back one of the most despised yet relied-upon figures in all of sports: IU's very own Donald Fehr. Fehr is the executive director and general counsel of the Major League Baseball Players Association, otherwise known as the players' union. Fehr, who graduated from IU in 1970 with a degree in political science, returns to Bloomington to discuss "Current Issues in Sports" during a lecture in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union.
